Recently MHS Visual Arts Students had the opportunity to participate in ArtReach at the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center near Robbinsville, NC. The one day workshop event is sponsored by Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts located in Gatlinburg, TN.
Each student participated in a class where they were able to learn the skills and techniques necessary to complete a traditional Appalachian craft. Classes included this year were learning to weave traditional baskets with invasive species like Kudzu, making traditional bark pouches, copper jewelry making, traditional Appalachian broom making, and natural indigo dyeing. They all were able to come home with something hand made that they did themselves, and each were able to take pride in their accomplishments.
Appalachia has a long tradition of art and craft. Many of the skills and techniques have been passed down for generations and were a daily necessity for living in these mountains. ArtReach offers this immersive experience for students to be a part of that heritage and to pass on the skills and knowledge to a new generation.
We would like to share our gratitude to for this wonderful opportunity. Our students had a great time and engaged in a meaningful learning experience.
