FIDDLER ON THE ROOF Comes to Franklin!

Looking for some musical theatre beyond campus? Franklin Light Opera presents the beloved Broadway classic Fiddler on the Roof, September 18 through 20 at the Williamson County Performing Arts Center in Franklin, Tennessee.

MTSU students may be especially interested in the Student Preview Performance on Thursday, September 17. Contact Franklin Light Opera at [email protected] for information about the student preview.

MTSU Double Reed Day!

Registration is open for the MTSU Double Reed Day on Sunday, September 27th! Join the MTSU bassoon and oboe studios, led by Staci Spring and Keith Sorrels, for a fun day of workshops, double reed ensemble, and performances. Our special guest artists, Rosalind Buda and Dick Hensold, will be bringing an array of traditional Celtic double reed instruments, and the day will include our own double reed version of the Scottish Highland Games! All ages and ability levels are welcome, and our Finale Concert (5pm in Hinton Hall) will be open to the public. Don't miss this unique opportunity!

What does a day as an MTSU School of Music student really look like? Come find out at MTSU MUSIC IRL on Tuesday, November 3!

Prospective music students are invited to spend the day with us and experience the School of Music from the inside. Sit in on classes, rehearse alongside our ensembles, meet faculty and current students, and explore the many opportunities available at MTSU.

Two MTSU School of Music alumnae are bringing their talents together for an exciting new collaboration!

Clarinetists Elisabeth Jackson and Kristin Humphrey have been working behind the scenes on a special project that brings together their shared passion for performance, teaching, and creative exploration. Drawing on experiences shaped at MTSU and beyond, they’re combining their individual musical voices, pedagogical influences, and artistic perspectives to create something new while honoring the traditions and mentors who helped shape them.

Their collaboration is also a wonderful reminder that an MTSU music education extends far beyond graduation. The relationships formed here can grow into new artistic partnerships, professional connections, and creative opportunities for years to come. We can’t wait to see what they’re creating together!

A national spotlight for innovative teaching and performance at MTSU!

This summer, Dr. Will Perkins, Head of the Voice Area and Assistant Director of the MTSU School of Music, presented at the national conference of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) in San Antonio, Texas.

His presentation, “Recital Glow-Ups: Bridging Tradition and Transformation,” was selected from more than 200 submissions and explored creative ways to make classical voice recitals more engaging, relevant, and accessible for today’s students and audiences.

The conversation is continuing beyond the conference. Dr. Perkins and his co-presenter, Casey Joiner of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, have been invited to develop their presentation into an episode of the Vocal Fri Podcast, scheduled to air this spring.

Congratulations to Dr. Perkins on sharing this work nationally and helping imagine new ways for our musical traditions to connect with the audiences of today and tomorrow!

A new opera takes the stage at MTSU!

Join us on Friday, October 2 at 6:00 p.m. in Hinton Hall for the premiere of Night at the Blue Orchid, a new 45-minute opera in two acts by Riley J. Madej.

Featuring performers Caitlin Clements, Warren Quandt, Vivian Acevedo, and Logan Watson, the production brings a new dramatic work to life with an intimate orchestration for string quintet and piano.

Come experience a world premiere and support new music being created and performed right here in the MTSU School of Music.

This week and next week, Phi Mu Alpha has rush events for any interested men to learn more about the organization and meet some of the guys. Phi Mu Alpha seeks to build community through the shared love of music and the universal instrumental medium of singing. We also wish to spread the positive, healing impact of music across the broader community. The educational process leading up to initiation revolves around your schedules and takes them into account!

- Thursday, 9/3, at 5 pm, we have Field Games at the MTSU Intramural Fields.
- Monday, Labor Day, on 9/7, at 6 pm, come stop by and play some board games with the brothers in SFA 101!
- Wednesday, 9/9, at 8 pm, stop by Strike & Spare, and we'll provide free bowling!
- Friday, 9/11, at 6 pm, we'll pay for you to play some laser tag with us at Phazer Kraze!
- Finally, if you're interested in giving the organization a shot, the only rush event required out of these is Formal Rush on Sunday, 9/13, at 5 pm. As the name implies, you'll want to dress up for this one.

One of our MTSU School of Music students is having quite a moment online!

Music student Elliot Ragland has gone viral with a beautifully unexpected performance of Radiohead on the musical saw, filmed outside a Waffle House in the rain. The reel has already drawn nearly 800,000 likes, along with thousands of comments from listeners around the world.

It is a wonderful reminder that musicianship can show up anywhere, sometimes far beyond the concert hall. Elliot’s creativity, personality, and willingness to make music in an unusual setting have clearly connected with people.

We love seeing our students find their own voices, take creative risks, and share music in ways that reach new audiences.

Dear School of Music Community,
What a wonderful first week it has been! There is something special about having our students, faculty, and staff together again, and I have loved seeing the energy return to our classrooms, studios, and ensembles. We also begin the year with one of our largest entering classes of freshmen and transfers in several years.

Here are just a few highlights from our first Friday Fanfare:

•We came together for our opening convocation, with faculty performances and our entire community singing the MTSU Alma Mater. What a meaningful way to begin the year together!
•Twelve music education students completed their student teaching placements, with three earning Teacher Scholars Awards.
•Five members of our Clarinet Studio represented MTSU at ClarinetFest ’26 in South Korea.
•Student Jordan Mathis spent part of the summer studying and performing opera in Italy.
•We are celebrating faculty accomplishments and awards here at MTSU and well beyond our campus.

These are only a few of the stories in this week’s edition. I hope you will take a few minutes to read the full Friday Fanfare and celebrate the people and experiences that make our School of Music such a special community.
