Looking forward to joining my good friend, Senator Lamar Alexander, at the Tucker Theatre on Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU)'s campus on October 19 for a conversation: "Leadership and Public Service: Past, Present, and Future."

We'll be celebrating Lamar's new memoir, The Education of a Senator. It's a book about what public service looks like at its best: not noise or division, but problem-solving and a deep belief that serving others is one of the most meaningful callings there is. Lamar was there in 1994 when I left the operating room to run for the Senate, and I'm looking forward to swapping stories, and to hearing the questions students bring.

In 1994, Lamar Alexander supported William H. Frist’s Senate campaign. He hosted a campaign fundraiser at his home and accompanied Frist on a few legs of his bus tour across Tennessee. Frist would later return the favor by supporting Alexander’s Senate campaign in 2002.

Senators Alexander and Frist can be seen together again on Monday, October 19th, 3:00-4:30pm in MTSU's Tucker Theater. Join us for a very special event as Senators Lamar Alexander and Bill Frist come to Middle Tennessee State University to discuss "Leadership: Past, Present, and Future" in celebration of Senator Alexander's new memoir, "The Education of a Senator."

Welcome to our second post in a series we call “Is Bart Gordon Faster Than…?”

From 1988 to 2009, MTSU alum Representative Bart Gordon (D-TN) competed in the ACLI Capital Challenge, an annual race for teams representing the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches of the Federal Government. We will be comparing Gordon’s running times with other notable legislators to see who is faster.

This week, it’s Gordon vs. Ryun as we compare his 1997 race time with that of Representative Jim Ryun (R-KS). This week’s competition is fierce, as Ryun is a former Olympic track and field athlete and won a silver medal in the 1500 meter event at the 1968 Summer Olympics.

How can distinctive collections reach more people?

Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) asked that question as it planned a move from CONTENTdm to JSTOR Stewardship. A new case study follows how library and archival teams compared platforms, worked through the migration, and began planning which collections to digitize next.

MTSU is ready for the start of the football season this weekend! Whether you choose to kick back and enjoy the games or clean out that garage, we hope you have a great long weekend! We will be closed on Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day. We will reopen on Tuesday, September 8.

As we prepare for the Fall semester, we wanted to reflect on the past Spring. We certainly had some fun (and chaotic) moments, and we hope to have more great experiences with new and returning graduate assistants!

The Albert Gore Research Center will be closed on Friday July 3 in observance of Independence Day. We hope that everyone enjoys some summer fun this holiday weekend.
This photograph shows Al Nagy and two of his comrades enjoying the weather in the Philippines in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II. Al Nagy served as a radio operator in the 37th Infantry Division in the Pacific Theater and was present during the invasion of Luzon. He later served as a journalism faculty member at MTSU, eventually becoming the dean of the College of Mass Communication.
