Third graders walked into their first Latin lesson expecting the usual, and instead found Mrs. Nickens dressed up like an ancient Roman!

PCA students are introduced to Latin in the third grade and learn the language, culture, and history of the Romans. Studying Latin provides so many additional benefits that enhance education at PCA. Latin develops and strengthens the mind through logic and promotes higher order thinking skills while engaging the language side of the brain.

To introduce Latin to students and show why we study Latin, Mrs. Nickens presented students with a challenge to complete what looks like a giant puzzle. Students are each given a handful of pieces of the puzzle to try to begin making connections. Eventually, students start noticing that they can be more successful putting the puzzle together by working together. Partner pairs turn into larger groups, and eventually the entire class is working together.

This allows students to make connections and solve this big puzzle, which begins to take shape in a very interesting way. The more students study the individual characteristics of the pieces, notice the little details, and use their logic skills to make connections, the pictures become clear. What first looked like one giant puzzle is now revealed as several smaller ones. With the completion of each puzzle, cheers erupt, and the students feel the success accomplished by teamwork, perseverance, and noticing details.

Latin study is much this same way. Latin teaches us to analyze and synthesize, solve puzzles in language, and make connections to the world around us!

Mr. Don McMurry, a longtime friend of PCA, pulled a shofar out of his backpack and asked our students to be patient with him. His first few tries got nothing but squeaks, and the kids could not stop laughing! But he kept at it, and when that shofar finally sounded through Frazee Gym, the whole room lit up.

That moment became the heart of his message. He talked about Joshua and Moses, and how God calls His people to be strong and courageous when the battles come, because they always do. Joshua 1:9 says it plainly. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

Our students got to see what it looks like to worship in the middle of a hard moment, even one as small as a shofar that will not cooperate. That is exactly what we hope they carry with them. Seeking God's truth and learning that He is faithful in every kind of battle, big or small.

Thank you, Mr. McMurry, for reminding our kids (and all of us) that there is nothing to fear when God is near.

This morning our freshmen class and all students new to PCA’s Rhetoric School took part in Initium Novum, a meaningful PCA tradition that commemorates new beginnings.

Our Student Council led the ceremony, giving each student a stone of remembrance, a clean slate, and a charge to forget what is behind and step courageously into the future. Every name written on a stone joins hundreds of others piled inside a glass jar, a visible reminder that these students are standing on the stories and shoulders of those who crossed from Logic School to Rhetoric School before them.

Each student also received an actual piece of slate, marked only with a gold plaque reading Initium Novum 2026, representing a fresh start and a new beginning.

Before the busyness of senior year begins, the Class of 2027 slowed down.

Two days at Deer Run Camp gave these students time in God's Word, time with each other, and time to consider the kind of people and the kind of class they want to be. Between the lake, laser tag, and late night conversations, they were challenged to surrender their futures to the God who holds them. Thank you to everyone who prayed for this retreat. We are excited for the leadership this class will bring to PCA this year!

What do you get when you step away from the normal routine of school to build community, deepen friendships, have fun, and grow together in your faith? You get restoration and transformation!

From games, lake time, recreation, and plenty of laughter to worship, biblical teaching, prayer, and time with friends and faculty, the retreat gave students space to connect with one another and consider what it looks like to follow Jesus in everyday life.

Through teaching from Titus 2, students were reminded that Jesus is more than a good teacher, we are saved by grace through faith, and we are called to live on mission, with passion, responsibility, and a growing ability to share and live out what we believe.

We are grateful for time away together and for the ways God continues to shape our students into young men and women who know Him, follow Him, and live faithfully for His purposes.

What happens when students take ownership of their school's culture?

At the end of last year, our Rhetoric Student Council asked to speak to the student body about starting the year strong. Mr. Nickens pointed them toward Unreasonable Hospitality, the book our staff had just spent the summer reading together. The students said yes to the extra reading, then spent time this summer preparing their message over some of Chef Will's smash burgers.

Each student brought a different piece of the message. Make caring cool. Notice people the way Zacchaeus was noticed. Service is black and white; hospitality is color. Remember that families are not perfect, and loving people means showing up again and again. Ask whose voice you are really listening to when life gets turbulent. And live it out, because following Jesus is not always convenient.

Their chapel challenged all of us to think differently about culture. Not as a mission statement on a wall, but as the way people feel when they walk through our doors. These students reminded all of us what that culture can look like when we choose it on purpose.

Grateful for these students and for Mr. Nickens investing in them all summer long.

It wasn't a landscaping crew out on our field this weekend.

It was our football dads and sons. They showed up together for our second annual Field Workday, already a highlight of the year for so many families. They weed-eated, trimmed, re-stained, and worked side by side to care for the place where their sons compete. Coach Euvarad said it best. "Our hope is to make this an annual tradition that will be carried on for many years to come, one that reflects the heart of PCA by teaching the value of servant leadership, stewardship, and investing in the next generation."

Before they packed up, dads and sons gathered together on the field to pray, asking God's blessing over the field, over their sons, and over the season ahead.

Thank you to every dad and player who gave their time and hard work. Go Lions!
