Meet the MTSU Tuba Studio: Cristian Santos!

Cristian is a freshman Exercise Science major and Music minor from Spring Hill, Tennessee. Staying close to home helped bring him to MTSU, but the campus, familiar faces, and the community he found here made it feel like the right place to begin his college experience.

Cristian came to the tuba relatively recently, picking it up during his freshman year of high school because of marching band. What started there quickly became an important part of his life, and he has continued building on that connection ever since.

What he enjoys most about the MTSU Tuba Studio is the relationship among its members and the sense that the work he puts into the program will help him grow. Right now, he is working on Capuzzi’s Andante and hopes to tackle the Sicilienne trumpet solo on tuba next.

Swipe through to learn more about Cristian, including his love of ramen, Frank Sinatra, and his dream of someday playing a program of dark, slow waltzes with a major symphony.

We’re glad to have Cristian as part of the MTSU Tuba Studio!

Meet the MTSU Tuba Studio: Nathaniel James!

Nathaniel is a sophomore Mechatronics Engineering major and Music Minor from the Lebanon and Mt. Juliet, Tennessee area. During his college search, MTSU stood out because he found a community that was interested not simply in what he could already do, but in helping him continue to grow.

That same spirit is what Nathaniel values most about the tuba studio. For him, the relationships formed here create a community where students can support one another through their individual musical journeys.

Nathaniel keeps fundamentals at the center of his work while continuing to expand his solo repertoire, study etudes and orchestral excerpts, and work on chamber music. And while engineering may be his academic path, music remains an important part of his MTSU experience. His dream ensemble is Carolina Crown, and he was an All-State musician in high school.

Swipe through to learn more about Nathaniel, including his love of guava, his appreciation for Kes, and what keeps him growing as a musician.

We’re glad to have Nathaniel as part of the MTSU Tuba Studio!

Meet the MTSU Tuba Studio: Max Lynch!

Max is a freshman Music Industry major from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, who did not have to travel far to find his college home. Growing up in the area made MTSU a natural choice, and he has quickly found a community within the tuba studio.

What Max enjoys most about the studio is the environment and the chance to be surrounded by like-minded people who share his interest in music. As he begins his first year at MTSU, he is working on James Grant’s Stuff and Haddad’s Suite for Tuba, building his solo repertoire while settling into life as a college musician.

Max’s musical interests reach well beyond the brass world, too. His dream gig is playing with Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, and Radiohead is a favorite when the tuba is put away. Add some hibachi chicken, and you have a pretty good introduction to Max.

Swipe through to learn more about Max and his first year as part of the MTSU Tuba Studio.

We’re glad to have Max as part of the MTSU Tuba Studio!

Meet the MTSU Tuba Studio: Taylor Hawkins!

Taylor is a sophomore Music Education major from Columbia, Tennessee. He chose MTSU in large part because of its Music Education program, but what stood out from his first visit was something more personal: a tuba studio that made it clear they wanted him to be part of the community.

That sense of community remains one of Taylor’s favorite things about the studio. Whether a day goes well or a performance does not quite meet his expectations, he values having people around him who continue to support him, challenge him, and help him grow.

This semester, Taylor is working on music by Blazhevich and Bordogni, along with Stuff, Andante & Rondo, and Three Grooves for Two Tubas. And looking toward the future, he has his sights set on one particular dream gig: the Nashville Symphony.

Swipe through to learn more about Taylor, including his love of fried okra, Mitski, and his willingness to talk a big game about sports even when his athletic ability may not quite back it up.

We’re glad to have Taylor as part of the MTSU Tuba Studio!

Meet the MTSU Tuba Studio: Peter Pontes!

Peter is a graduate Music Performance student from White County, Georgia, who came to MTSU for the community and the opportunities to continue developing as a musician.

This semester, Peter is working on Barbara York’s War and Rumors of War, while focusing on expanding his high register and gaining more orchestral experience. Looking ahead, his dream is to build a career that combines full-time college teaching with performing as a soloist.

There is also more to Peter than the tuba. He experiences synesthesia, associating sound with color, and when it is time to step away from the practice room, sushi and Oliver Tree make his list of favorites.

Swipe through to learn more about Peter, his goals, and what he enjoys about being part of the MTSU Tuba Studio.

We’re glad to have Peter as part of the MTSU Tuba Studio!
