Cyber threat actors are actively targeting Siemens S7 Series programmable logic controllers (PLCs) across multiple sectors using internet scanning services and AI-generated exploitation scripts disguised as legitimate monitoring tools.

We released a joint Cybersecurity Advisory with the NSA - National Security Agency, FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation Cyber Division, U.S. Department of Energy, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency addressing the threat to Siemens S7 Series PLCs within the broader context of ongoing threat activity targeting internet-connected operational technology devices, including other manufacturer PLCs.

We urge all organizations to take the following actions immediately:

✅ Inventory all Siemens S7 Series PLCs within your environments.
✅ Apply critical security patches as soon as possible.
✅ Verify network segmentation and make sure PLCs are not accessible from the internet.
✅ Review and strengthen access controls.
✅ Enable comprehensive logging and monitoring.
✅ Implement the Siemens-specific hardening measures in the advisory.

Warmer temperatures can improve wastewater lagoon performance, but extreme heat can also create challenges for treatment and regulatory compliance. This one-hour webinar explores how seasonal temperature changes affect BOD removal, dissolved oxygen, nitrification, algae growth, and overall lagoon efficiency.

Participants will learn how microbial activity responds to warmer temperatures, why elevated BOD can persist during summer, and how factors such as dissolved oxygen, hydraulic retention time, short-circuiting, and aeration impact treatment. Practical troubleshooting strategies will help wastewater operators and managers identify treatment bottlenecks and improve lagoon performance during the warmest months.

The term “activated sludge” means nothing more than biological wastewater treatment provided by microorganisms suspended in wastewater by mixing and aeration systems. How the mixing and aeration take place along with tank configuration and influent wastewater feed can be very different. Sometimes people get lost in the various configurations and forget that at its core, treatment boils down to aerated microorganisms suspended in wastewater. The presentation will take an historic look at some of the common activated sludge treatment schemes – from early treatment to modern granular sludge treatment – always remembering the key component involves aerating and mixing microorganisms.

Understand how various activated sludge treatment schemes are similar and how they are different
Understand how and why activated sludge processes have evolved from the 1920s to the present

🎉 Fleming Training Center Welcomes New Manager!

We’re excited to announce that Jenny Strobel is the new Manager of Fleming Training Center!

You may recognize Jenny from her previous role as FTC’s Training Program Manager, a position she held for the past four years. During that time, she helped lead statewide operator training, workforce development, technical assistance, and the day-to-day operations of the training program.

Jenny steps into the role following John Lawrence’s retirement in April. We’re thankful for John’s leadership and all he contributed to Fleming Training Center, and we wish him the very best in retirement!

Jenny holds a Tennessee Wastewater Grade IV operator certification and is passionate about supporting the people who keep Tennessee’s water and wastewater systems running. She looks forward to continuing to work with industry partners and water professionals across the state in her new role.
