Autism Center Stage

Autism Center Stage We're about promoting awareness of autism and other developmental disabilities. Started in 2008, the Autism Center Stage was once Autism Epicenter.

This page is dedicated to share awareness, educate, and share information about autism. Sometimes I will also share information concerning other developmental disabilities as they relate to disabilities in general. You will find a wide variety of articles related to news, research, education, services, and home life and society. We are also here to support each other and provide a safe environment

for sharing experiences and advice. Please feel free to reach out to others for support, contribute, or ask questions related to autism.

Sir Dantes started middle school this year. With an aide's help he's learning to change classes and today his first ride on the bus. He was so excited! Growing up!

Sir Dantes and one of his best friends after the first full day of school. They started seventh grade this year.

I'm so proud of both of them but neither will probably be mainstreamed into gen ed classes. It's not because they are not smart because they are! It's more of because the social abilities are delayed and the sensory issues.

I use to be so mad about this but Sir Dantes is actually happier and learns better in the small groups of his peers.

And, he would be bullied to an extent without even realizing it.

Sir Dantes and I took an afternoon to go to the Discovery Center. After Sir Dantes explored every exhibit we took a stroll outside through the wetland and saw some turtles and, if you look close you can see it, a river otter.

Then we went back inside and Sir Dantes went to all the exhibits again! Lol

It doesn't take much for one to see his social skills and maturity level are still very delayed. This science museum is geared for early elementary aged children to introduce them to different scientific concepts and laws.

The exhibits are simple and, as you can see, built for much smaller children. Sir Dantes is twelve and starting middle school this year.

So it goes with autism. Here people understood as the center offers many programs for special needs children. It can be quite a different story when at the store, a restaurant, or a department store.

But as a parent you grow a thick skin and Sir Dantes had a great time. ❤

Sir Dantes' last day of summer camp today. The City School System has a summer day camp that is free to special needs children. They are awesome and this was Esmond's fourth and last year. Next year he'll be in the County School System that runs the middle and high schools.

Anyway, when this program started it was for the entire week and the last day it was not only water day but several food trucks and other activities like face painting.

Last year it was cut to four days and this year no food trucks. It was cold Dominoes pizza with most of the awesome staff waiting to make sure the kids had enough and the few parents that showed up for the last day.

The budget keeps getting slashed away at. Regardless the kids had a great time and we are so grateful and thank them.

I can understand this. Autistic people have very heightened senses. It is so heightened that some experience physical pain. It can lead to a meltdown.

With Sir Dantes it is certain tones he hears and direct light like sunlight that causes that. His other senses are very heightened but don't cause pain.
