In August 2025, the Phoenix Fam came together for our first Kick-a-Thon for a Cause.

The idea was simple.

Our students would use something they do every week β€” kick β€” to help people in our community who needed it.

They found sponsors.

They collected donations.

They kicked.

And kicked.

And kicked some more. πŸ˜‚

Our families jumped in.

Friends and relatives supported them.

And when it was all over, the Phoenix Fam had raised more than $3,000 for Greenhouse Ministries.

There wasn't a medal for this one.

No trophy.

No podium.

Just a group of students and families using what they had to help someone else.

And as we come to the end of these three weeks looking back at Phoenix's first three years, this felt like the right story to finish with.

We've watched our students earn belts.

We've watched them become Black Belts.

We've watched them compete.

We've watched them become National Champions.

But martial arts was never supposed to be only about what you can accomplish for yourself.

It's also about what kind of person you become β€” and what you choose to do for other people.

To every student who kicked, every family who helped, and every person who donated:

You showed what the Phoenix Fam is all about. 🧑πŸ”₯

On Tuesday, Phoenix Martial Arts turns 3.

And after spending the last three weeks looking back...

We couldn't be more grateful for the people who made these three years possible.

You.

Remember that first tournament we told you about last week?

It led here. 🌎πŸ₯‹

In March 2024, a small group of Phoenix students stepped onto a competition floor for the first time.

No competition team.

No national experience.

Just some kids willing to be nervous, step onto the mat anyway, and see what they could do.

A few months later, the Phoenix Competition Team was born.

They trained.

They competed.

They won some.

They lost some.

They got better.

And then in July 2025, Phoenix did something that would have seemed pretty crazy when those first students competed just 16 months earlier:

We went to AAU Taekwondo Nationals.

For the first time, Phoenix athletes competed against some of the best martial artists from across the country.

And they came home with three National Championships. πŸ₯‡πŸ₯‡πŸ₯‡

A year later, we went back.

This time to Fort Lauderdale for the 2026 AAU Nationals.

And Phoenix athletes added two more National Championships. πŸ₯‡πŸ₯‡

Five National Championships in two years.

We're incredibly proud of that.

But when we look back at these pictures, the medals aren't really our favorite part.

It's remembering where they started.

The nervous first tournament.

The first competition practices.

The losses that hurt.

The extra rounds after everyone else went home.

The corrections.

The conditioning.

The travel.

The teammates pushing one another to get better.

National Champions weren't created at Nationals.

They were created in all those ordinary practices when nobody was watching.

Three years ago, Phoenix didn't have a competition team.

Today, five National Championship titles have come home with members of the Phoenix Fam.

And it all started with a few kids willing to step onto the floor for the first time. 🧑πŸ”₯

Never underestimate where a first step can take you.

Some of them walked into Phoenix wearing yellow belts.

Today, they wear black. πŸ₯‹πŸ§‘

When Phoenix opened its doors in August 2023, we had students at all different points in their martial arts journeys.

Some were beginners.

Some came to us with experience.

And some walked into a brand-new Phoenix Martial Arts as color belts, not knowing that they would eventually become part of some of the most important days in our school's history.

In November 2024, Phoenix held its first-ever Black Belt Promotion.

Then in June 2025, another group stepped onto the floor for our second Black Belt Promotion.

Those days weren't really about getting a new belt.

They represented the classes nobody saw.

The nights they came to class tired.

The techniques that wouldn't click.

The corrections.

The frustration.

The times they wanted to quit.

The friendships.

The confidence that slowly developed.

And the decision, over and over again, to keep showing up.

When we look back at pictures of some of these students as yellow belts and compare them to the young men and women wearing black belts today...

That's what three years looks like to us.

Not awards on a wall.

Not how many students are enrolled.

Not how much Phoenix has grown.

How much THEY have grown.

And maybe that's the thing we're proudest of from these first three years.

To every Phoenix Black Beltβ€”and every color belt currently working toward becoming one:

Keep showing up.

One day, someone may put your Day One picture next to the person you've become...

and you won't believe how far you've come. 🧑πŸ”₯

300 became 600+. πŸŽƒπŸ”₯

A couple of weeks ago, we shared the story of Phoenix's very first Trunk or Treat.

We had only been open for about two months, had no idea what to expect...and more than 300 people showed up.

So naturally, the next year we thought:

Let's do it bigger. πŸ˜‚

In October 2024, the Phoenix Fam came together for our second FREE Trunk or Treat.

But this time, it wasn't just Phoenix.

Local businesses from outside our shopping center came out and set up.

Food trucks joined us.

Phoenix families decorated trunks.

Friends invited friends.

And our parking lot absolutely filled up.

By the end of the night, more than 600 people had come through.

Twice as many people as the year before.

But once again, the number isn't our favorite part of this story.

It's what that number represented.

A little event started by a brand-new martial arts school had turned into something that Phoenix families, local businesses and people throughout our community wanted to be part of.

That's exactly what we hoped Phoenix could become.

Not just a place where you come, take a class and go home.

A place that brings people together. 🧑

To every family who decorated a trunk, every business that participated, every food truck that came out, and every person who brought their family...

It started with 10 athletes. πŸ”₯

A few months earlier, a small group of Phoenix students had stepped onto the competition floor for the very first time.

They came back wanting more.

So in August 2024, we decided to see what would happen if we took competition a little more seriously.

We selected 10 students to become the first members of the Phoenix Competition Team.

This wasn't going to be another martial arts class.

It meant extra practices.

Harder training.

More conditioning.

More accountability.

Learning how to win.

And maybe even more importantly...

learning how to lose.

Those 10 athletes weren't selected because we knew they were going to win championships.

They were selected because they were willing to work.

And together, they started building something that hadn't existed at Phoenix before.

A team.

Over the next two years, new athletes would join them. They'd push each other, travel together, celebrate wins together, deal with losses together and represent Phoenix far beyond our four walls.

But in August 2024, none of that had happened yet.

There were simply 10 students willing to raise the standard.

The original Phoenix Competition Team. 🧑πŸ”₯

And they were just getting started.

We weren't even a year old. 🧑

In July 2024, Phoenix Martial Arts was named Best Martial Arts Studio in Rutherford County in the Main Street Awards.

And while having that plaque on the wall means a lot to us, that's not really why this moment belongs in our three-year story.

It's how it happened.

This wasn't an award decided by a panel of martial arts experts.

People voted.

Our Phoenix families voted.

Their friends voted.

People in our community voted.

Less than a year after we opened our doors, enough people were willing to put Phoenix's name down and say:

"This place means something to us."

That's the part we'll never forget.

Because in August 2023, we were hoping people would simply give a brand-new martial arts school a chance.

Eleven months later, our community was telling us that Phoenix had become something worth believing in.

And since this anniversary series isn't supposed to be about what we've accomplished, let's make this one about the people who actually earned it:

You.

Every student who walked onto the mats.

Every parent who trusted us with their child.

Every family who told a friend about Phoenix.

Every person who took the time to cast a vote.

You put that first award on our wall. 🧑πŸ”₯

And three years later, we're still incredibly grateful.

Before the national championships...there had to be a first tournament. πŸ₯‹πŸ…

On March 16, 2024, a small group of Phoenix students did something none of our students had done before.

They stepped onto the competition floor.

Phoenix had only been open for about six months.

We didn't have a competition team.

We didn't have a trophy case full of medals.

We certainly didn't know that Phoenix athletes would eventually compete on the national stage.

We just had a group of students willing to try something new.

And if you've ever competed in martial arts, you know that walking onto that floor for the first time takes courage.

You're nervous.

Your heart is racing.

There are people watching.

And eventually, they call your name.

Then it's just you.

Some won. Some lost. Everyone learned.

But the most important thing they did that day was step onto the floor.

Because that small group helped start something.

Their experience would eventually lead to more Phoenix students competing.

Then a competition team.

Then our first trip to AAU Nationals.

Then national championships.

But none of that existed yet.

On March 16, 2024, we were simply proud of a few Phoenix students who were brave enough to go first.

Every big journey has a first step.

This was ours. 🧑πŸ”₯

πŸ₯‹ OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED.πŸ₯‹

A black belt is something you earn. And when our students earn one at Phoenix, we believe the certification behind it should mean something, too.

At Phoenix Martial Arts, our black belts aren't certified only through our school. They receive their official Kukkiwon certification from the World Taekwondo Headquarters in Seoul, South Korea.

Kukkiwon is the international standard for Taekwondo black belt certification, with more than 12 million Poom and Dan certificates issued worldwide.

These students have spent years training, testing, failing, improving, showing up, and putting in the work required to reach this level.

They deserve more than a certificate that says Phoenix believes they're a black belt.

They deserve an internationally recognized credential that backs up what they've earned.

Today, we're incredibly proud to congratulate our newest Kukkiwon-certified black belts on receiving their official certificates:

πŸ₯‹ Merida Martinez β€” 2nd Degree
πŸ₯‹ Makenzie Tolbert β€” 2nd Degree
πŸ₯‹ Elijah Cotellese β€” 2nd Degree
πŸ₯‹ Dante Spitaleri β€” 2nd Degree

πŸ₯‹ Minh-Khue Bui β€” 1st Degree
πŸ₯‹ Abby Rook β€” 1st Degree
πŸ₯‹ Jayden Guadarrama β€” 1st Degree
πŸ₯‹ Isaac Watson β€” 1st Degree

Your names are now part of a worldwide lineage of Kukkiwon-certified Taekwondo black belts.

You earned the belt.

Now you have the credentials to back it up.

Congratulations. We couldn't be prouder of you. πŸ”₯

Sometimes the best things aren't part of the original plan. 🧑

When Phoenix opened in 2023, a Homeschool Taekwondo program wasn't on the schedule.

But we started hearing from homeschool families looking for something a little different.

They wanted opportunities for their kids to be active during the day.

To learn something new.

To build confidence.

To make friends and be around other kids.

So in February 2024, we decided to give it a shot.

Phoenix Homeschool Taekwondo was born. πŸ₯‹

We didn't know exactly what it would become.

We just knew there were families asking for it, and we had an opportunity to create something for them.

What started as another class on the schedule became its own little community inside the Phoenix Fam.

We've watched friendships form, beginners progress through the ranks, families connect, and students accomplish things they probably never imagined when they walked into that first Homeschool class.

And it taught us something important pretty early in Phoenix's story:

Sometimes growing isn't about sticking to the plan. It's about listening to the people you're here to serve.

To all of our Homeschool families who have been part of this program over the last two and a half years...

Thank you for helping build something special. 🧑πŸ”₯

This one wasn't our accomplishment. It was theirs. πŸ₯‹πŸ§‘

On January 27, 2024, Phoenix Martial Arts held our very first belt promotion.

For months, our first group of students had been showing up.

Learning.

Practicing.

Getting frustrated.

Trying again.

And slowly realizing that getting better at something doesn't happen overnight.

Then came the day they finally got to show what all of that work had accomplished.

For us, this was much bigger than changing the color of a belt.

These were the first students who had walked into a brand-new Phoenix Martial Arts just a few months earlierβ€”many with little or no martial arts experience.

Now they were earning their first new rank at Phoenix.

And that's when something we'd imagined while building this place became real:

Phoenix wasn't just growing anymore.

Our students were growing.

Since that day, we've watched a lot of belts change color inside these walls.

But there will only ever be one first belt promotion.

To the students and families who were there on January 27, 2024:

You were the first. 🧑πŸ”₯

And you helped set the standard for everyone who came after you.
