Vocal coaching is much more than just taking someone through exercises and disseminating technical information. It is the ability to effectively mentor your client. There are a lot of very knowledgeable instructors with vast experience and thousands of documented teaching hours but that doesn’t necessarily make a great coach. It is not just what you teach, but how you teach it that in my estimate, makes or breaks the student/teacher relationship. Every client is going to have subtle if not blatant differences in the way they process and react to the information given. It is up to the instructor to notice these differences and customize a vocal coaching experience that will leave the student feeling prepared as well as inspired!

The mark of a great teacher is their ability to live vicariously through their students to the degree of honestly and sincerely relating to their issues. It is this empathy that creates trust between the teacher and their client and formes the bond necessary for a powerful learning experience!

On a more practical note, allowing the student to experience their vocal issues through exercise trial and error as well as listen to examples from their coach and their peers, makes for a memorable vocal coaching lesson as well! It is the delicate balance of experiences and information put together in just the right package for each and every student that dictates the outcome of every lesson and moreover the clients ultimate level of success.

In conclusion, it is my professional opinion that while being educated and knowledgeable in the area of vocal technique is a prerequisite to teaching; it is only one of the necessary ingredients that pour into the foundation of great teaching! Ultimately, it is the selfless nature of mentoring that in my experience, is the dominant characteristic of powerful vocal coaching!

Mastering The Stage -

One of the biggest issues I have come up against in my 25 years of coaching is the anxiety often accompanied with making the transition from the studio to the stage. How do we overcome the heart pounding, sweaty palms and in some cases, shear terror that comes with stepping in front of a room full of listeners and potential fans?

The first question to ask yourself is why am I here?
Why am I standing in front of all these people?
I mean, really…. why am I doing this?

If your first answer is “because I want to promote my songs and my brand” “Get myself out there”, then you just missed the most important reason of all; the one reason almost every artist I’ve worked with in my 25 years as a coach has missed.

The answer? Simple…. To share. Yes, to share your story; your journey, your passion for your music and the real life experiences that inspire it. After all, that’s what music really is; a collection of thoughts and experiences shared in a way only you are qualified to, in its most powerful form. So when you think about it, standing on that stage is more of an opportunity to connect with human beings than it is to convert potential fans. It is a collection of testimonial moments shared with unabashed transparency and vulnerability in a medium that has no equal.
