Mrs. Furnival's class took advantage of this stunningly beautiful weather and went out onto one of our learning porches for some lab work! Our young scientists were busy learning about measurements, including measuring liquids in milliliters.

September STREAM
A Fantastic Start to an Exciting Year of Learning!
Our students are embracing a hands-on approach to learning as they explore science, technology, reading, engineering, art, and mathematics through creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.
We began the school year with engaging Play-Doh activities. Kindergarten students practiced forming the numbers 0-5, while first graders learned about STREAM and used Play-Doh to spell the word "STREAM." Students in third and fourth grade listened to One Word for Kids and selected a word to create with Play-Doh. Fifth graders also listened to One Word for Kids and designed a Play-Doh symbol to represent their chosen word.
Students then took on an exciting engineering challenge: designing a tinfoil boat that could hold either 12 or 24 golt balls. Through this activity, they practiced planning, testing, problem-solving, and improving their designs-important skills for every STREAM learner.
Our students are now immersed in a variety of exciting investigations:
• Kindergarten: Students are exploring fingerprints using magnifying glasses. They are observing the unique details of their fingerprints and transforming them into creative fingerprint animals.

• First grade: Students are exploring music and sound as they design musical instruments and investigate the sounds their creations produce.
• Second grade: Students are learning about flight by creating Hoop Flyers and identifying how and why they fly.
• Third grade: Students are investigating music and sound while creating instruments and experimenting with the sounds they make.
• Fourth grade: Students are building cars and exploring racing techniques. They are discovering how design, motion, and engineering can work together to improve performance.
• Fifth grade: Students are designing and testing paper airplanes. They are recording flight times and distances as they explore how different designs affect performance.
September has been an incredible beginning to our STREAM journey! Through hands-on experiences, our students are learning to ask questions, think creatively, persevere through challenges, and apply their learning in meaningful ways.
We are off to a fabulous start and look forward to an exciting year filled with discovery, innovation, and endless possibilities!

A Great start to Second Grade
It has been a super start to second grade! Our classroom has been busy learning, exploring, and getting to know one another.

Super Citizens & Explorers
Through literature, we are exploring what it means to be a Super Citizen—showing kindness, helping others, and making our classroom and school a better place. We are also discovering what it means to be an Explorer by asking questions, making connections, and being curious about the world around us.

Science Explorers
Our young scientists have been busy learning about balance and matter while practicing the scientific method. We are asking questions, making predictions, observing, and discovering how things work!

Witch Fingers for Fluency!
We are making reading practice fun! Students are using their special “witch fingers” to track the text as they read. This fun strategy is helping us follow along, build fluency, and become stronger readers.

Learning Outside!
We are taking advantage of our beautiful outdoor learning porch while enjoying literature and meaningful conversations about kindness, friendship, and how we treat others.

Math & technology

We’re finding many ways to use our iPads to learn and having daily number talks to increase our number sense!

Dear Steel Valley School District families,

Please note that there has been a change to our original school calendar that impacts Parent Teacher Conferences.

All Parent Teacher Conferences will now take place on the same day - Thursday, November 12.

Previously, the district held elementary Parent Teacher Conferences and secondary Parent Teacher Conferences on separate days, which has meant some parents and guardians needed to make separate childcare arrangements or work arrangements on two separate occasions. By changing to a single day, our hope is that it will ease the childcare and scheduling burden for some of our families.

This change means all Steel Valley School District students will have Thursday, November 12 off from school. It also means that middle school and high school students are now expected to be in school on Thursday, October 22, 2026, which was previously scheduled to be the day for secondary Parent Teacher Conferences.

We appreciate your flexibility and understanding with this schedule change, and we hope it helps more families attend and connect with their children’s teachers.
