Last night I stayed up transcribing video game music for viola.

✨ 🎶 🎮 👾🎻💫

Honestly, even though it takes me awhile, this has to be one of the best ear-training exercises I could put myself through.

Video Games are often accompanied by entire orchestral scores, be they played by real musicians, or a symphony of virtual MIDI instruments.

Pulling out all the intricacies and most beloved memorable moments of a theme song, and then condensing it into one single voice line in the Alto Clef, is definitely is challenging.

But I love learning.
I love what I do.
And I love these games.
And I love this music.

And spending my time immersed in these words...connecting to them through the portal of music... makes me feel like I’m flying through all of the games’ vivid imagery.

It’s like I’m truly there.

I can see the characters up close, witnessing them in my minds eye, jump, fly, climb, attack, defend, earn points, and master levels.

And I believe that teaching music in this way - connecting music to the magical environments we spend our childhoods in - helps unlock the door to play and for everyone.

So jump with me. Jump into the virtual realm of games and music.

Join the adventure.

And may this portal that’s unlocked for me, open for you too.
