Four stages of Misty Mountain, from broad color masses through tree structure, color refinement, and finishing adjustments.

This was a kind of crazy experiment where I started with about an eighth to a quarter inch of white titanium oil paint on the upper half of the painting. I worked the tree trunks and much of the foliage on top of and into that thick white paint while it was all still wet. I wanted to see what kind of textural and color effects I could get by starting that way. It was very challenging, but I loved the final result.

Take a moment before you scroll. Which flower catches your eye first—and where does your eye travel after that? Each part of the painting should lead naturally into another, giving the viewer a reason to keep looking.

Composition can sound complicated. I like to think of it as visual pathways: how are we leading the viewer from one area of the painting to another?

In this excerpt, I look for anything that pushes the viewer out instead of keeping the eye moving.

The first version of Where the Lilies Bloom was already a good painting. Then I got an idea about how I might make it better—or at least make it a painting I liked more—so I went back into it.

When the little details start taking over, squint.

It helps reduce all those small shapes into larger value groups so you can compare your darkest dark with your lightest light.

Try it on your own painting and notice what suddenly moves forward-or falls back.
