Jane Hart is a respected thought leader in the UK who describes herself as “an indepedent advisor on Social Learning and Collaboration” (http://www.c4lpt.co.uk/blog/). Recently in her blog Learning in the Social Workplace, Jane describes how L&D has been changing to more actively involve learners. The old model was “packaging” learning content and serving it to learners. The future, Jane says, is more about “scaffolding”. This means creating a partnership with a group of learners to provide a framework and the right conditions for learning and performance improvement. This eventually leads to what she terms “building the new personal and social capabilities” needed by “connected workers”. These are employees who work and learn in the digitally connected workplace. Jane shares in her blog article a handy chart that compares the three learning approaches (packaging / scaffolding / capability building). To learn more about this new world of self-directed learning, Jane invites us to the Connected Worker website.
