Join the School of Journalism and Strategic Communication for a Midday Visions & Perspectives talk with Harry Boyte Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. in LB 125. Boyte is the co-chair of the Braver Angels Civic Scholars Council, and his presentation will discuss civic engagement, community organizing and public work.

Boyte has spent decades exploring how people engage in public life, connect across differences and work together to solve problems. He is the founder of Public Achievement, a youth-led civic engagement initiative that teaches children and teenagers how to be active citizens in their communities. He also worked as a field secretary with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during the civil rights movement.

His work raises important questions for journalists and communicators: How do we build trust? How do we communicate across differences? And how can communication encourage people to participate in their communities?

The School of Journalism and Strategic Communication would like to thank Jena Ashby of Nonprofit Support Network for joining us Sept. 10 for a Midday Visions and Perspectives event focused on community development, storytelling and the importance of data collection.

Ashby shared with our students the importance of being considerate and respectful when interviewing others and sharing their stories. She also emphasized the importance of taking the time to thank people for trusting us with their experiences.

Students put that lesson into practice by writing thank-you cards to someone who recently shared something meaningful with them. The cards were addressed and stamped to be sent as a small way to show appreciation.

Thank you, Jena, for sharing your experience and helping our students see the power of thoughtful, respectful storytelling!

On September 11, 2001, journalists ran toward the story the world couldn't look away from. They documented grief, chaos, and courage in real time. In doing so, they gave history something to hold onto.

On the 25th anniversary, the School of Journalism and Strategic Communication pauses to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost and to remember the reporters, photographers, and communicators who bore witness so the rest of the world could understand.

Ball State University and School of Journalism and Strategic Communication are proud to congratulate alumnus David Haugh on his selection to the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame's 59th induction class.

Haugh built his sports journalism career at the South Bend Tribune and Chicago Tribune before moving into Chicago radio and television.

Congratulations to SJSC student Lillian McCart, winner of our CCIM SuperParty Passport contest!

McCart was randomly selected from a group of students who entered our raffle after visiting each of the SJSC tables at SuperParty and marking them off on their passports.

Not only does McCart now have an endless supply of popcorn, but she also joined Ball State’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America as a result of her SuperParty experience.

We just hope she can get it all back to her dorm! 🍿

They did it! The BSU Public Relations Student Society of America has been awarded the PRSSA National Star Chapter Award. This recognition wouldn't be possible without the chapter’s amazing members, officers, and faculty.

BSU PRSSA empowers students in communication through hands-on projects with a nationally affiliated student-run firm, industry networking, and career preparation, bridging classroom learning with real-world experience.

We’re proud of the chapter’s journey and are excited to celebrate them as they look forward to the future!

Congratulations to Assistant SJSC Director Matt Lowe for receiving the Dean’s Choice Faculty Award!

This award recognizes Lowe for all of the work he’s done within the SJSC, including making student success a priority. Whether he’s supporting students through helping to create memorable experiences for them or bringing people together through some of the school’s biggest events, CCIM Dean Kristin McCauliff recognized Lowe’s ability to make students feel welcome and supported.
