The next individual we’d like to feature as part of our Spotlight on Alumni series is Dan Council. He currently serves as an Outreach Coordinator covering Northern Indiana for the Indiana Geographic Information Office.

Dan graduated with concentrations in GIS and Human Geography. Immediately after college, he interned with the Porter County GIS office. He then moved to Canada to pursue a Master’s in Spatial Analysis from Toronto Metropolitan University, where he focused on business applications of GIS and economic geography. After spending 3 years working at Environics Analytics, a company known for geodemographic analysis and segmentation for marketing purposes, he moved back to his hometown of La Porte.

Dan has kept close ties to Ball State and our students. We’re proud of his fine work and glad he’s back in Indiana!

We have received a giant map of Indiana, which measures 10' x 16' and comes with an educational kit for teachers and K-12 students. The map is available at the GIS Research and Map Collection at Bracken Library (BL224). This is an invitation for everybody, especially Social Studies students and teachers. We are looking for people to collaborate and create lesson plans based on the map. For contact, please get in touch with Dr. Seemann ([email protected]).

In the Spotlight on Alumni Series, we aim to share some professional achievements held by our graduates.

Here, we have Tyler Ryan, a proud 2020 graduate in Meteorology. He started out in the TV industry in Youngstown, Ohio at WFMJ. In 2022, he moved to the Quad Cities as a weekend meteorologist at WHBF/KLJB. After a short time there, Tyler was able to move home and work in Indianapolis at Fox59 and CBS4.

He left Broadcast Meteorology in 2026 to pursue his dream of working for the National Weather Service. Tyler currently works for the Weather Forecast Office in Des Moines, Iowa.

Whether it’s Broadcast or Applied Meteorology, our faculty in the School of Earth, Atmosphere, and Sustainability are there to support your career ambitions!

Days 9-11 of Dr. Call’s storm chase class: Texas -> Oklahoma -> Colorado -> Kansas -> Nebraska -> South Dakota -> Nebraska -> Kansas -> Oklahoma -> back to Texas. Some amazing storm structure in between!
