Introducing The Common Arts Program

Do you have a unique hobby that you could share? Are you passionate about a skill you have developed? Do you have a gift or talent you could teach others? Have you always wanted to be a teacher or wish you could contribute your skill set?

St. James the Less Academy is looking for community members who can pass on an interest or aptitude for some engaging activity to the next generation of students.

Three or four times a month the Academy will offer a variety of courses in order to further its vision to help students become well-rounded, diversely-skilled persons.

So far we have commitments from community members to teach students to:

-Hook rugs
-Cook
-Woodwork
-Design and program robots
-And do practical things like change a tire or jump a car battery

We are looking for more folks to lend their time and talent to the new "The Common Arts Program". It has a focus on practical, useful, technical, and creative pursuits and skill-building. Elementary and Middle School students at SJLA will have the option to rank their choices for courses they are interested in and then through designated rotation will get to learn a variety of practical common arts from talented and experienced community members.

Do you have a special gift or talent you can teach? Send an email to our Headmaster, Dr. Grover Green, at [email protected] to share your idea.

Dr. Green and a group of teacher-leaders at the Academy have been selected to participate in The Wisdom at Work Fellowship sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation at Harvard University, an initiative of the Abigail Adams Foundation. It is a two-year executive education fellowship that equips and empowers school leaders and their teams to promote flourishing communities. It is led by Karen Bohlin, EdD who is Director of the Practical Wisdom Project at the Abigail Adams Institute. Karen herself is a devout Catholic and renowned educational philosopher and school leader.

The Wisdom at Work (WaW) Fellowship is designed for teams of 4–6 school leaders who are deeply committed to the flourishing of their school communities but often find that daily demands make that vision hard to realize. It views practical wisdom (phronesis)—the disposition to press pause, deliberate, and respond well—as the antidote to reactive decision-making. Practical wisdom enables leaders to attend to context, engage stakeholders meaningfully, and navigate competing priorities—turning everyday challenges into opportunities to foster flourishing. Rooted in innovative, research-based design, the Wisdom at Work Fellowship will equip school leaders and their teams with tools and practices they can use to lead with wisdom, even under pressure. Participants have come from diverse K-12 settings, including traditional school districts, independent schools, and charter schools across the U.S & abroad.

Benefits:
-World-class wisdom-based executive education
-Opportunity to participate in a research-practice partnership
-Gaining a networked community of practice of like-minded leaders
-Fellows earn a stipend for participation

Dr. Green and his team are deeply honored to have been chosen for this exciting opportunity to grow as leaders and help our community to flourish.
