Whetstone Academy

Whetstone Academy is a therapeutic boarding school for students 10 - 15 at time of enrollment. Whetstone Academy was founded in 2011.

Whetstone is a therapeutic boarding school for young men. Tucked away in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near the Chattooga River, our school serves boys between the ages of 10 and 15 in grades five through nine. There will be three occasions throughout the calendar year that Whetstone Academy will be closed and residents will go home on visits. These three 10-day breaks follow our sprin

g, summer, and winter family workshops. Our morning academic classes traditional and experiential with an afternoon focus on Erdkinder, or farm school, following Maria Montessori’s guidelines for middle-school development while addressing the students’ emotional and behavioral needs. As part of our farm we have animals such as donkeys, goats, pigs, and chickens that we are able to get fresh eggs from daily.

As we prepare the direct sow portion of our garden, our academic team is working with our students to build a wattle fence to protect the plants. This is an excellent example of the commitment Whetstone’s teachers have to experiential and cross-curricular learning. Here we have history, science, math, and much more rolled into this useful and fun activity.

We’re grateful for this dynamic, creative, and caring team!

We’re excitedly organizing the first Whetstone Academy Graduate Summer Retreat!

Whetstone’s 57-acre campus has a substantial amount of undeveloped wooded land, and we’re always looking for new ways to utilize this section of our property to help our students stay connected to nature. Today, I’m out near the property line scouting out solo sites.

I just came across this beauty as I marked the final site where our land borders the National Forest.

Playfulness is an important part of connecting with others and maintaining relationships. We look forward to seeing how these staff members bring their renewed focus on building connections with our students to their work.

Whetstone Academy is proud to have all of our staff who are engaged in caring for our students complete the TBRI* Caregiver Training.

The Trust-Based Relational Intervention* Caregiver Training is a significant investment given that it is a four-day intensive training and all program staff must receive the training in order to implement this model.

Whetstone Academy is the first and only therapeutic boarding school to invest in and adopt this extensive evidence-based and trauma-informed model.

Last weekend, we went fishing at Chau Ram County Park. This beautiful park's odd name refers to the confluence of the Chauga River and Ramsey Creek.
