Update on Post-Affirmative Action Impact on Elite Colleges:
The first class of freshman entering college after SCOTUS ended affirmative action (spring 2023, affecting the fall 2023 application season) is being scrutinized for both racial and socioeconomic diversity.
This is relevant at elite schools, not the vast majority of colleges and universities
No easy takeaways here! Early analysis shows:
1. Two elites (MIT, Amherst) show a decline in Black and Hispanic students matriculating this month.
2. At MIT, the number of Asian students increased and the number of whites remained the same.
However:
1. The number of Black students remained stable at Duke, Yale, Princeton.
2. Hispanic students remained steady and Yale and Princeton and increased at Duke.
3. Lower income students increased in number at Duke and UVA.
Not all schools have reported. And multiracial student enrollment has not yet been analyzed.
So: there are no straightforward conclusions yet. My sense is that each school is assessing student applications differently, while trying to follow the law.
