Summer Quest Families –

We feel a great sense of gratitude for the opportunity we’ve had to provide academic summer programming for your children over the last 13 years. Every summer has truly been an adventure, and we’ve enjoyed building knowledge and having fun learning with your children along the way! However, there is a season for all things, and the season for Summer Quest has come to a close. MVNU Summer Quest will not be returning in summer of 2025. We encourage you to explore the summer academic opportunities provided by SPI Spot, Mount Vernon YMCA, and other community groups. Please remember there are also many non-academic summer opportunities available through local dance, sport, and theater groups. We will miss watching your children grow and learn, but we trust that they will continue to have the as they participate in the many other amazing programs Knox County has to offer.

Garde Quest Day 5🪴

We had a great last day of garden quest! We made honey sesame snacks and tasted the strawberry jam we made yesterday. We also learned about exploding seed pods and made our own exploding seed pods using balloons and bird seed. For our grand finale, we did a scavenger hunt in the Children's Garden. Everyone had a great time exploring and discovering the garden. It was a joy to spend time with all these gardeners this week!

STEM Challenge Quest Day 5

Day five in STEM Quest ended with a bang! We began the day by listening to “The Three Little Pigs and the Somewhat Bad Wolf”. After the read aloud, each child got to plan and construct a house for the little pigs out of various materials around the classroom. We ended the day by going more in depth with gravity. Students were able to explain what force would pull their eggs to the ground during the egg drop. We then went outside and tested everyone’s structures. Out of 21 children, only two eggs cracked!!!

Thank you for a wonderful week! These kids were amazing to work with!

Art Quest Day 5🎨

Today we read a book about sandcastles and then using the inspiration from the book created our own sandcastle collage. We also read a picture book about a little boy exploring his campsite at night with a flashlight. Using a plastic bag, transparent paper and black paper we created our own version of night. We drew on the transparent paper with permanent marker and then used our paper flashlight to light up our artwork!

Blast Off to Kindergarten – Day 5



Today, the students individually read Going to School, an emergent reader book, to an adult. We read Are You Ready to Play Outside? by Mo Willems, made a collaborative list of things the students like to do outside, then drew/dictated a summer story. The students enjoyed writing names/numbers/shapes in shaving cream. We read The Mixed-Up Alphabet by Steve Metzger, then took turns matching upper case letters to the corresponding lower case letters. Thank you so much for sharing your children with us! We wish them the best of luck as they transition to kindergarten!

STEM Challenge Quest Day 4

We had a blast during day 4 of STEM Quest!! We began the day with a discussion about energy and two main types (kinetic and potential). The kids watched an informational video and then got to explore how potential energy can be transferred to kinetic. They created popsicle stick catapults in which they launched a puff ball. Next, we began our last big project for this quest! After learning about gravity and velocity, students dove into the engineering design process for creating a structure for the egg drop. They were tasked with creating a structure that would protect an egg from breaking on impact. We built them today and will test them tomorrow!🥚

Today we were blown away as we learned about how tornados and hurricanes are formed. We also learned about storm safety and what to do in severe weather. We are going to finish tomorrow with learning all about clouds and rainbows.

Garden Quest Day 4🪴

Today in garden quest, we started an experiment to learn about capillary action using celery. Gardeners explored the outdoors to collect materials for leaf rubbings and clay impressions. 🍁We played a game of garden tag and made vegetable and fruit insects for snack! Finally, we ended the day by discussing different ways to preserve foods and worked together to make strawberry freezer jam for our snack tomorrow!🍓

Art K-2 Quest Day 4🎨

Today in art quest we finally finished our frog habitats and created a lilypad for the frog to sit upon. 🐸Using cardboard and a blue and green acrylic paint we covered the surface to look like a real lily pad. Our next project of the day was inspired by a book we read together about bees and their hive. 🐝 We printed bubble wrap with paint to mimic the hive and used thumbprints to represent the bees. We will be adding details tomorrow! One of our last projects of the day was creating ice cream relief sculpture drawings. Using a special mixture of liquid glue, shaving cream and a splash of watercolor - we created 3-D ice cream. Tomorrow we will be adding our details to our ice cream desserts! 🍨

Blast Off to Kindergarten – Day 4

Today, we spelled words on the calendar and counted to 25. We read Going to School, an emergent reader book. We read Rhyming Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas and Let’s Go for a Drive! by Mo Willems. We reviewed rhyming word pairs using this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHroOYO1iOo, matched rhyming picture cards with a partner, and then the students individually identified pictures that did/did not rhyme. We also reviewed all letters/sounds.

STEM Challenge Quest Day 3

Day three in STEM Quest was a huge success!! We began the day with an introduction to coding. In the game we played, there was a small cat who needed help picking up coins and making it to the finish line. We got to practice putting in a code, testing it, and even debugging the codes. Next we had a challenge to see who could create the longest paper chain using only one piece of construction paper (the longest was about 88 inches). After that, we began our big project for the day. We made float boats! To introduce float boats, we talked about why some things float and others sink. We defined the words buoyancy and density and added it to our vocabulary sheet for the week. Once we clearly defined the terms, we were able to begin. I explained that our challenge was to create a boat that could hold 25 Pennie’s without sinking. Students were then given a cost sheet of various materials. I gave each student seven fake dollars to spend on materials for their boat. They had to figure out the amount of materials they needed and determine their total cost. Once they purchased materials, they began construction. After the boats were made, we tested them in the water with the pennies.
