🎬 Day 2 on set!

The cameras were rolling again at Washington Glass School as the PBS/WETA crew continued filming for a special story about the artists, ideas, and community that make this place what it is.

Today’s cast included Tim Tate at work, Erwin Timmers making shattered tempered glass, and Trish Kent and Patricia de Poel Wilberg working on their own pieces.

It’s pretty great seeing the everyday creative chaos of the School through the lens of a camera crew. What we get to see every day is becoming part of a much bigger story.

More to come… and we’re very curious to see the finished episode!

Things got a little more cinematic at Washington Glass School this week as PBS/WETA came by to film Tim Tate, Erwin Timmers, and Michael Janis talking about glass, art, public art, and 25 years of the Washington Glass School.
There were cameras. There were interviews. There were many takes.

Legendary glass artist Therman Statom in Washington Glass School this week!
One of the highlights of his visit? Seeing Therman proudly modeling a T-shirt featuring Co-Director Michael Janis. It made for a fun photo and a memorable moment.
Therman's groundbreaking work has influenced generations of artists, and his commitment to innovation, storytelling, and community continues to inspire all of us.

Washington Glass School Co-Director Michael Janis has a new article published in East City Art exploring the recent Memory, Makers and Monuments workshop in Washington, DC.

The workshop convened artists, planners, historians, curators and community leaders to examine the evolving role of commemorative public art, with a particular focus on community engagement, local history and the processes behind creating meaningful public memorials.

As Washington Glass School continues to participate in public art and memorial projects throughout the region, we're pleased to share Michael's reflections on these important conversations.

WGS artist John Henderson shares some pix from the Convergence show in Bethesda. "Convergence" was a contemporary art exhibition presented by the Black Art Today Foundation at Gallery B in Bethesda, MD. The showcase featured over 40 BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and artists of color) creators. The exhibition focused on creative intersections, collaborative dialogue, and deliberate stylistic juxtapositions across multiple artistic styles and media.

We at Washington Glass School stand in solidarity with Dr. Anthony Fauci against the recent wave of hostile, politicized attacks. For over 40 years, he has guided our nation through public health crises with steady, unwavering dedication.
We still remember his encouragement during the Glass School’s 2021 re-opening, presenting Erwin Timmers with the ceremonial golden thermometer. He reminded us to remain resilient, disciplined, and compassionate.
Science belongs in the lab, not in political theater. Thank you Dr Fauci for your decades of sacrifice and your enduring legacy of service.
