We’ve had lots of inquiries asking when our classes will resume and we’ve been talking about that a lot lately. Although it seems that the parameters we use for our planning purposes change daily, we have developed a plan and will adapt it to whatever comes our way next!
The first stage of our plan is to offer a limited slate of our Charlotte Mason Tutoring classes for the fall of 2020. Specifics will be provided via social media and our email list as they become available; our goal is to provide a list of classes and a calendar by July 10. We anticipate returning with a full slate of classes in the Winter and Spring.
In a few weeks we will also begin accepting Interest Forms for our Seaside Cottage School program! Similar to our past program, the Cottage School would provide families with a hybrid school where in-person classes are offered for a portion of the week and assignments are provided for students to complete at home the remainder of the week. We will be gauging interest in this full program this summer via the Interest Form with the hopes of possibly kicking off the program for a portion of the 2020-2021 academic year. The link to the form will be posted to our page and will be sent via email when available.

The Reptile Nature Study Class have now reached capacity. Thanks for your interest!!
For those of you that have followed our story here on Facebook or joined us on our first year in this new endeavor, this is old news 😊. But for those currently searching for ways to invigorate their homeschool for this spring or are looking for outside activities to add to their homeschool for the 2020-2021 school year, we wanted to let you know we have shifted gears! The cottage school no longer offers the full curriculum school setting that it has in the past. But in its place, we have implemented an a la carte class offering (now called Charlotte Mason Tutoring) to allow families to pick classes that fit their interests, schedule and budget. Class offerings, dates and times are listed here on our Seaside Cottage School page individually under the “events” heading. We are always interested in learning what local homeschool families are looking for in terms of classes for their students, so feel free to drop us a note in the comments with your wish list! Are you the parent of a high school aged student? Interested in classes for this spring? We are currently exploring the possibility of adding some high school classes, potentially on Tuesdays. Email us at [email protected] if you are interested so we can keep you updated!
Hello friends! Spring Term is quickly sneaking up on us, so check out our Events to see what classes we are offering!
Merry Christmas, friends! May the joy and peace found at the Manger be yours in abundance this Christmas season.
And a quick reminder that our Winter Term Classes begin January 16...don't forget to register before the New Year! See our "events" pages for more details on the classes offered.
We are beginning to post our Winter Term class offerings... see our events listings for more details!
Have questions for us? You can contact individual Presenters for class specific questions (see event listings for contact information). For general questions about our program, send us an email at [email protected] or shoot us a message through Facebook!
Is tomorrow really November 1 ?!? Time to start talking about plans for our Winter Term classes at Charlotte Mason Tutoring! Dates have been set and will be as follows: January 16, 23, 30 and February 13, 20 and 27. Current classes in the works include a Nature Study/Natural History class for both upper & lower elementary students focused on invertebrates and an upper & lower elementary composer/history class focusing on Handel and the time period during which he lived. We also are hoping to add 1 to 2 additional classes to the line up! We will begin posting class details and registration information here on November 11.
Hello Seaside friends & families! I wanted to pass along a fun opportunity for any older students...the Gaillard has an educational performance titled "Ladies Among Lions" that they will be performing throughout the year at local schools (see description below). They have offered to add a performance at the Gaillard on November 18 at 9 am for homeschool groups. The cost of the performance is $5 per person, it is 60 minutes long, and it is recommended for middle and high school students. I am happy to organize a group...if you are interested, please comment below with the number of tickets you would need. I know lots of us with older students also have littles, so perhaps we can organize a small group of "chaperones" to monitor students so that those with littles can go to the library across the street or a nearby park while their older student enjoys the show.
Description: "Explore the plays of William Shakespeare’s through the lens of his most famous (and infamous) female characters. The Three Witches take the audience on an unforgettable journey through the words and moments of “Romeo and Juliet,” “MacBeth,” and “Taming of the Shrew” and discover the strength and courage of the Bard’s unforgettable women."
Hello! We have been in conversation with the Gaillard Center regarding their educational program titled Shakespeare: Ladies Among Lions. This is typically a "traveling" show that is performed at schools in the area, but they are also willing to hold a special performance at the Gaillard for homeschool families. This show is recommended for middle school and high school students due to some mature themes. No date has been chosen as of yet - at this stage, we are just trying to determine how many students may be interested in attending. If this is something you are interested in, please comment below! Cost will be $5/person. A link to the Gaillard's Educational Performances page has been provided so you can take a look... https://gaillardcenter.org/outreach/school-programs/
Edited to note: all families are welcome to attend - this is not just for Seaside/Charlotte Mason Tutoring families and students! Please feel free to share within the Homeschool Community. If you have a group that is interested in attending, you can also fill out the form by clicking on the "Teacher Signup" button or contacting Sterling Devries at the Gaillard: [email protected].
Fall Term classes will start October 10 and so far we have four classes posted in "Events"! We will be capping classes at approximately 10 students and each of the classes is a little over half full at this point. We hope to be adding additional classes around the 5th of August, so be sure to check back with us here on Facebook or add yourself to our mailing list (see previous post) to get the update. Questions? Contact us at [email protected]!

A quick note regarding the dates provided for each term: classes will not necessarily be held on Mondays - due to the limitations with the FB "Events" feature, we simply listed the Monday of each week in which classes will be held in that term. It is more likely that classes will occur on Wednesday or Thursday of weeks when we are in session.
Hello friends! We know many families have begun investigating their options for classes and programs for the 2019-2020 Academic Year, so we wanted to let those interested in Seaside Cottage School know there are some changes in the works to our program! Next year we will make the shift to an "à la carte" type program - we will be offering a schedule of classes on a per term and per class basis, thereby providing families with the flexibility to choose the classes that interest their students and the ability to participate during the times of year that are convenient to them without having to commit to an entire year's worth of participation. Our page will become our marketplace of activity where classes and schedules will be posted. Check back with us over the next month as our plan for 2019-2020 takes shape and more information becomes available! As always, you can email us at [email protected] with questions or if you would like to be added to our email list!
We are quickly approaching the start of our 2018-19 academic year! Therefore, we have had to close our registration for Fall of 2018 at this point. If you are interested in registering your student or students for Seaside Cottage School for Winter Term of 2018-19 (starting November 5, 2018), please send us a note at [email protected] and we will begin contacting all interested families after September 1, 2018. Thank you!!
Summer School! This year our summer school consisted of a week spent in the classroom learning about Charleston geography and history, boats, signaling flags, channel markers and currents. We also listened to a little opera music and had fun with M.C. Escher. We then spent two days out-and-about; first we visited the Mace Brown Natural History museum and ended our week with a "pond poke" to see what critters live in our local fresh water ponds.
So blessed to have this beautiful day for fun and fellowship with our Seaside families!
The Founders Committee is currently working hard to prepare all of the materials for our 2018-2019 school year! As boxes of books and other materials arrive, we really begin to get excited for all the topics we have chosen for our "feast". We especially love the package containing our beautiful art prints from Riverbend Press! Our fall term Picture Study will focus on Pieter Bruegel the Elder...we thought this quote from Charlotte Mason paired beautifully with Bruegel's "Landscape with the Parable of the Sower"
Celebrating the last day of classes with our First Annual Field Day!
Engaging in hands-on activities is always a classroom favorite - for both students and presenters. Using gumdrops and toothpicks as their building materials, our Form II students investigated how the geometry of a structure contributed to its stability.
A quick reminder that our Early Registration closes on April 1! If you are interested in registering for our 2018-2019 academic year, contact us at [email protected]!

Exchanging Valentine's boxes and cards with classmates. Each child was asked to write a personal note to each of their classmates, giving them encouragement or noting a quality which they admired in that person. What a sweet, uplifting tradition.
Our Winter Term Recitation Night was a success! We love watching our students demonstrate to their families all that they have learned throughout the term. And it appears these two students enjoyed watching their older siblings sing and sign our closing hymn, "Count Your Blessings" as much as their parents did...
Earlier this week we were able to enjoy a beautiful day at Caw Caw exploring the world of plants. Time was spent both inside the classroom and outside in nature. Many thanks to their wonderful staff.
Seaside recently had the chance to visit the Gibbes Museum of Art to experience the works of English naturalist Mark Catesby (on loan to the Gibbes from the Queen of England...how cool is that?!?). We enjoyed time exploring the gallery and studio time to create our own works of art. Many thanks to our wonderful docents!
Charlotte Mason describes narration as "the act of knowing" and notes that it is critical for retaining that which is gained through the reading of living books: “They must read the given pages and tell what they have read, they must perform, that is, what we may call the act of knowing. We are all aware, alas, what a monstrous quantity of printed matter has gone into the dustbin of our memories, because we have failed to perform that quite natural and spontaneous ‘act of knowing,’ as easy to a child as breathing and, if we would believe it, comparatively easy to ourselves.”

Another beautiful day at the beach spent learning about the creatures hidden in the waters of Charleston Harbor! Mr. Koenig brings his seining net and vast knowledge, which makes for a spectacular field trip.
We love it when our member families stop by to see us during our library and office hours on Wednesdays! The kids have had a blast playing Clue, Scrabble and Bird Bingo while moms chat, pick up a few new library books, and ask questions about at home assignments for their students.
What a spectacular day! Seaside families gathered at Isle of Palms to enjoy the solar eclipse and a day of fellowship. We thought cloudy skies were going to ruin the show, but at the last minute the clouds parted and we were able to view the eclipse at 100% and then watch as the moon and sun slowly parted ways. The breeze, cooling temperatures, animal activity, and thunderstorm in the distance all made for an incredible experience.
Hoping all those that joined us for the Handicraft Workshop today enjoyed it as much as we did! The older students tried their hand at basket weaving, while the younger ones listened to the story of "Peter and the Wolf" and created character puppets. We loved seeing the creativity and uniqueness in each of their projects.
Charlotte Mason Tutoring exists to support homeschooling families desiring to teach their children by the Charlotte Mason method. We provide an à la carte selection of classes that are curated and taught by several Presenters. Currently, we offer new class selections each of the three terms during the academic year, with each term consisting of six class sessions. Class selections may vary from term to term depending on the topics chosen by our individual Presenters, but have included art, composer study, and nature study/brush draw/natural history during the 2019-2020 year. Other potential class topics include traditional academic subjects such as math, reading, history and geography in addition to the Charlotte’s “feast” topics such as picture study, drawing, folksong, and hymns. Individual classes are grouped together on Thursdays allowing students to engage in learning for a block of time up to four hours in length (including a supervised lunch break). Our host is St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in the Old Village of Mount Pleasant where we occupy classroom space. We aim to provide an active, engaging environment following Charlotte's principle of education being an atmosphere, a discipline and a life!
Please note: Charlotte Mason Tutoring is organized by a group of the Founders of Seaside Cottage School. Seaside is currently not offering classes in a typical school setting consisting of one comprehensive program. Questions? Please feel free to send a private message to us via Facebook Messenger or email us at [email protected].
