Fourth grade students learned all about pendulum art with Ms. Rogers. They created pendulums out of PVC pipe and focused on process instead of product during this art class.

Second grade students had a great time sharing their biographies with their families and other CPE classes. Students researched a person of interest, compiled their information, edited and shared their final product with an audience. It was so much fun watching these amazing characters "come to life".

Fifth grade students had the opportunity to learn about and create space rovers from recycled materials.

Congratulations to Carolina Park Elementary Alumni; Harrison, Jaxon, Chase and Jonah on a successful defense of their Battle of the Books Championship. Their team (The Pink Carrots) took home the title last year as 5th graders and they recently won the CCSD Middle School division as Cario Middle School students!

First Grade students have spent the last two weeks working with Cat Brantley of Engaging Creative Minds! To enhance their reading comprehension unit on birds, students created kinetic bird sculptures and their habitat. They were thoughtful in choosing a specific bird beak and feather pattern unique to their habitat and understood these features are what makes a bird a bird. Thank you so much to Engaging Creative Minds for partnering with us once again!

World Down Syndrome Day is on March 21st each year. Students and staff wear mismatched socks on this day. Why Mismatched socks? This is for a few reasons...
When looking at a karyotype (a picture of our chromosomes, stained for viewing under a microscope), the chromosomes look like paired socks. The staining makes them look striped. Some folks even wear an extra sock to represent the extra chromosome. Another reason for wearing mismatched socks is to promote the celebration of differences. Some buddies wear the same set of mismatched socks to also point out that we are more alike than different. One last reason for the crazy socks is that they get attention. If someone notices the socks, they may ask about them and allow for a discussion about Down Syndrome, differences, acceptance, and hope.

We had a blast celebrating Pi Day with our students in Math. Across the school we discussed the meaning of Pi in mathematical terms, took a vote and created a pictograph to organize our data, and to top it all off, students enjoyed their very own mini-pie! The special classroom skeleton, Archimedes even joined in on the fun. It was a close race all day, but Cherry Pie was the clear winner! You can check out our students' pictograph and data in the hallway outside of the Math Lab.

Today was a great day at Carolina Park as we continued our focus on students' career development. 3rd, 4th and 5th graders' had their turn this week as we hosted 19 career speakers that represented a variety of careers (US Secret Service Agent, Special Language Pathologist, an athletic trainer, a firefighter and so many more!) Students learned all about these different careers while participating in engaging lessons and activities. We love this day because it opens our students' eyes, minds and hearts to the potential opportunities for their future. Thank you to all of our volunteers for taking time out of their busy day to come visit us. We can't wait for next year!

In March and April, the Counseling department focuses on career and college development for all students. One of those fun events is our annual Touch a Truck! Yesterday, K- 2 students participated in this event. Students were able to rotate and interact with these professionals and how they use their trucks for their specific career. They are learning about different careers in a fun, engaging manner. We had visitors from Mt. Pleasant Public Services, a Bobcat, a Kubota, a Berkeley County Elec bucket truck, a tractor, a fire truck, a vet, and a grabber truck. Kids even got to see the Fire Truck speed away for an actual emergency!

Touch a Truck is a wonderful tradition at Carolina Park. It is great to expose our youngest coyotes to a variety of careers - all while having fun and seeing some pretty impressive trucks!

5th grade students went to visit the Yorktown today at Patriots Point. Students learned about the significant roles of aircraft carriers during WWII. As they explored all parts of the ship, students learned more about our military veterans, engineers, and many of the important roles people had to help run the ship. Students also had an opportunity to work through a mission with a simulation to escape enemy fire! It’s always a great day when we can explore math and social studies standards through real-life field experiences!

First and Second graders in the house of Altruismo enjoyed their first "Altruismo breakfast" together this morning. They were able to meet new friends in their same house, and it was a great way to build community between grade levels. What a wonderful way to start the day! GO ALTRUISMO! Stay tuned Coyote Nation for other House-specific events.

3rd grade teacher Peyton Franco is our ALPHA of the month! Check out the kind things Coyote nation had to say about our ALPHA of the month!

Mrs. Franco knows kids by name, even ones not in her class, and shows them love and acceptance. Students need to feel wanted and seen and Peyton fulfills this act to a tee! Her students work hard and desire to receive her praise and support. She is hardworking in coming up with learning activities that are fun and engaging for the whole class. If I were back in Elementary school, I would want her as my teacher.

Mrs. Franco is kind. She listens to her students and teaches excellent lessons!

The way Mrs. Franco genuinely loves all of her students is simply amazing. A student transferred to another school recently and Peyton celebrated that child all week long - making sure she felt all the love before leaving. I know in my heart that that student will always remember Mrs. Franco. She has a gift for making her students feel like they are her own and I just love me some Peyton Franco! (and not just because she’s from Alabama!

Mrs. Franco is such a positive light in this school. I admire her natural gift of working with children.

We had an AWESOME author visit with Jerry Pallotta today! The students have really enjoyed learning about his Alphabet and Who Would Win books, creating hallway displays inspired by his writing, and watching Who Would Win teacher competitions this week. All students also received their own Who Would Win book today! Thank you to Ms. Smith, Mrs. Daniel and everyone involved in making this event such a success.

What an awesome experience! Mr. Glassberg, father of 5th grader Nola Glassberg, came to speak with a few 5th grade classes about his profound trip to Normandy Beach with his grandfather, a WWII veteran who stormed the beach during the D-Day invasion. Through quotes, pictures, and stories, we learned about the importance and intensity of this massive victory for the Allied powers. Thank you for sharing this incredible experience Mr. Glassberg!
