May’s food scrap results are in and they say y’all are a-May-zing!!🤩
In the month of May we diverted 1.85 tons of food waste away from landfills to instead be locally composted. That’s 3,700 pounds for us Americans or 4 adult male grizzly bears for our Canadian friends🐻🇨🇦
It’s time for Summer! Whether it’s a beach trip, picnic, boat day, or another adventure, be sure to compost those food scraps. Remember that there are 23 drop-sites in the Charleston area to choose from, all with the same access code. These drop-sites are open to everyone, but you must register through the linktree in our bio to start contributing today.
Keep composting and we’ll be back soon enough with June’s results.

WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MORE TREES?🌲🌳🌴

Be part of a greener future for Mount Pleasant!

The GREEN Commission is opening our next phase of the Canopy Restoration Project, inviting YOU to help select sites for planting new canopy trees that will enhance our local environment. Did you know that involvement in greening projects strengthens community ties and boosts overall wellness? Plus, increasing tree coverage cools our town and reduces stormwater runoff.

In 2025, we planted 69 new trees to provide shade at Carolina Park Recreation, the Jones Center and in the Old Village, based on your earlier recommendations!

How You Can Help: Submit your suggestions for planting locations before July 31, 2026! Share your ideas and let’s work together to improve our town’s canopy coverage. Simply fill out the survey here with your site recommendations: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScTymv3FMO-PuUvC4AErL_nSxFLEwyENIBfNCTaiZgu_F4PJg/viewform?usp=publish-editor

What We’re Looking For:
• Site location (address, landmark, or photo’s may be helpful)
• Ideal tree type for the site (small understory for screening, tall canopy tree for shade, fruit trees for community benefit…)
• Why this site should be chosen
Bonus: A support letter from local groups or residents!

Note: Eligible site locations for the Canopy Restoration Project must be accessible public spaces that would benefit from enhanced tree coverage. Ideal sites include parks, school grounds, community centers, street edges, and other communal areas.

The GREEN Commission will review all submissions and select the projects that offer the greatest environmental and community benefits.

Let’s plant the seeds for a greener Mount Pleasant!

Safeguarding our ecosystems, aquatic and terrestrial alike🦐🦌🐬🦝
We know that these prohibited items cause catastrophic harm to our birds, fish, mammals, shellfish, and more.
We know these prohibited items used to invade our beaches, marshes, trails, roadsides, and more.
We know that our Environmentally Acceptable Packaging ordinance has been very effective at protecting wildlife and our natural habitats.
❌ Single use plastic bags
❌ “Thick” plastic bags
❌ Plastic straws
❌ Polystyrene or styrofoam cups, coolers, clamshell containers, and plates
There are exceptions. Check the links in our bio for a full description of this ordinance.
This ordinance applies to business establishments.
Is a business not complying? The Mount Pleasant Police Department is responsible for enforcement.

Let’s cut the crap…💩
Dog p**p isn’t harmless and some of you missed that memo. Every time it rains, pet waste that wasn’t picked up gets washed towards our local creeks and marshes. Those are the same creeks that we love to swim, fish, and boat in.
P**p bacteria in our waterways is bad enough, but it gets worse. Dog p**p that isn’t picked up can spread viruses and parasites to our furry friends. Keep our dogs safe, it’s your duty to pick up the doody.
💚 Pick it up in a bag and throw it away (in a proper trash can)
💔 Don’t just leave it there. P**p is a contaminant to our waterways and other dogs.
💔 Dog p**p doesn’t go in our yard waste bags. Yard waste is composted and nobody wants to garden with dog p**p.
💔 Don’t fling it anywhere! It’s still a pollutant even if it’s out of sight.
💔 It’s not fertilizer (they don’t sell dog p**p at garden centers do they…)
Cleaning up after your furry friends and disposing of their waste ensures safety for all of Mount Pleasant’s wildlife, dogs, and humans alike. Be a ⭐️Scooper Star⭐️, no one else is going to scoop your dog’s p**p for you…

Hold your horses 🤲🏼🐎
We love your energy about taking down infested trees that have invasive Asian Longhorned Beetles, buttttt some of y’all gave us quite the scare. All infested woody plant material is subject to very particular rules and regulations. These rules are meant to keep this nasty bug from spreading farther across the Charleston area. Infested trees and their woody debris WILL contain eggs, larval, and adult stages of the Asian Longhorned Beetle. That means wherever our infested trees get hauled to, infection will spread. So, what are these fancy schmancy rules?
1 – Contact the Asian Longhorned Beetle team (humans from Clemson and USDA) prior to the removal
2 – Make sure you use a contractor in compliance with the program. Infested trees must be chipped on site or hauled to specific quarantine chipping services.
3 – That’s kind of it 🤷🏼‍♂️. We just need to make sure these infested trees are NOT being driven all over the place, making the infestation worse.
We love proactive efforts by residents and businesses, but let’s be careful to avoid making the problem worse on accident 🐜🔨

So when we said March's results would be ready soon.... about that.....
A long time ago in a Town far, far away... Mount Pleasant residents composted 1.93 tons of food waste in March instead of sending it to the landfill. That’s 4,255 pounds of food waste that we diverted. You're doing great Mount Pleasant!🧡💚

We’re doing this!!! The forecast has improved and chances of lightning have passed. It may drizzle a little, but it should be a cool and overcast morning. We hope you’ll still join us to take care of Shem Creek ❤️

05/08/2026

We’re keeping an eye on the forecast for Saturday morning. We don’t mind some rain, but lightning is a no-go for us. We want to make sure all of our volunteers stay safe. With that, we will be making a final judgement call about the weather at 9am tomorrow morning. This should give you plenty of time to cancel your drive prior to the event, as needed. This final weather judgment call will only be posted on our social media accounts!! So make sure you check at 9am for a cancellation or a “yes the event is still on”. Fingers crossed we can clean at Shem Creek tomorrow.
