Did you also know that 30 of Michigan's 43 native freshwater mussel species are classified as highly endangered? That's why CMU biology students with the Woolnough Lab work so hard to protect them.

Last week, a team of student researchers travelled to Cadillac to test methods of separating invasive zebra mussels from native mussel populations in Lake Mitchell. Zebra mussels are a highly invasive species that not only smother native mussel populations, but also strip water columns of essential nutrients for fish and aquatic wildlife. With the help of the Michigan DNR and other state and federal organizations, this research hopes to enable landowners with the methods they need to improve the health of Michigan's freshwater ecosystems.
