Offering great programs for Lucy Beckham High School and Wando High School students to include academies on Entrepreneurship, Pre-Medical, Automotive, STEM and so much more. The SC Governor's School for Agriculture at enjoyed visiting schools in Orangeburg, Dorchester, and Charleston County! On our stop, we visited the East Cooper Center for Advanced Studies in Mount Pleasant, SC.
East Cooper CAS serves students from Lucy Beckham High School and Wando High School. The program's mission is to bridge the gap between high school and college by providing training and technical skills.
During our visit, we met with Mrs. Peyton Schultz and students in her Horticulture Entrepreneur Program. We received a tour of the 3-story building that included a Fab Lab and a sustainable rooftop garden.

Meet teacher of the Year Finalist, Katie Johnston, East Cooper CAS

What started out as an annual volunteer opportunity for Katie Johnston turned into an 11-year teaching position at Wando High School and now the East Cooper CAS. It also earned her the chance to compete for the Charleston County School District Teacher of the Year. Johnston was named the school’s first-ever teacher of the year and has been named one of CCSD’s Top-5 Teacher of the Year Finalists.
The Auburn University graduate moved with her husband Jeff in 2004 to take a position at a local architecture firm. During her fifth year with the company, she volunteered to critique the work of Wando’s civil engineering students where she first realized her passion for teaching.

Last night, the East Cooper CAS recognized the inaugural 16 senior Lighthouse Keepers for their impressive accomplishments in high school. The school developed the Lighthouse Keeper Program to reward their brightest and hardest working students for taking the initiative to go above and beyond in advancing their college and career readiness. Symbolically, a lighthouse is a symbol of strength, guidance, and leading the way forward through difficult times.
The Lighthouse Keeper's job is to maintain the structure so that everyone in view can have the guidance needed.
To qualify as a Lighthouse Keeper, students completed requirements in multiple academic areas along with submitting a senior reflection explaining what being a Lighthouse Keeper meant to them. Additionally, five Lighthouse Keepers were awarded scholarships through a stringent selection process.
