First grade students from of are indeed learning to be global leaders, as stated in their school's motto, in this week's continuance of their Magnificent Community creation. Gina Bean, a veteran ECM instructor, continued to spark inquiry and excitement from students as they persevered in learning about important aspects of our community. Such a simple, but powerful, moment took place when the teacher made the decision to have students pause on their creative work to fulfill their civic duty by voting on decisions that would affect their collective artwork. By noticing this as a moment of opportunity, the teacher made the time and space for students to take a hands-on approach to problem solving and employ their civic dispositions (collaboration, empathy, and honesty) while fulfilling their civic responsibilities. This is a wonderful example of the opportunities that can arise naturally within a collaboratively planned Engaged Learning Experience. πŸŽ‰πŸ˜

Dear JBE Family,

Thank you for embracing our children not only during Down Syndrome Awareness week, but all year long. We are so grateful to be part of a school where ALL children are seen, heard and included. Huge thank you to .c.perry , OT who put together lessons, speakers, and videos for a week of learning. You are a true gift. The JBE community of staff, students and parents is unmatched. Nowhere else are carline parties being thrown to celebrate differences! Our mama hearts are full and although the future is unknown, for now we rest easy knowing our little ones are where they need to be each week with the kindest school community.

With love and thankfulness,
Rebecca Sailor (aka Lucile’s mom) and Meredith Miller (aka Bo’s mom)

Embracing diversity and spreading awareness during World Down Syndrome Awareness Week! πŸ’™πŸ’› Let's start meaningful conversations with our students and learn together. Here are some conversation starters to get the dialogue going.

"I hear you are learning about Down Syndrome this week, what have you learned about it?"

"How are those with Down Syndrome different?"

"How are they similar?"

"How should we treat individuals that have Down Syndrome?"

"What are ways that we can show kindness to those that are different from you?"

Together, we can make a difference! πŸ’›πŸ’™
