So honored to be recognized at the CCSD board meeting. We had an amazing team this year! Can’t wait for next year’s battle!
Since 2019 CCSD has hosted an annual Book Battle competition for elementary school students in fourth and fifth grade. In its first year, nine teams competed and the event has grown with over 20 schools competing. The event also serves as the kick-off for our district’s Read Across America Week each year and highlights the value and excitement of student reading.
This year’s winner of the competition was East Cooper Montessori Charter School who were honored last night at the CCSD Board of Trustees Committee of the Whole meeting. Freddy Harris, Sylvia Lucas, Eliza Shaw, Amelia Walton, and Turner Whitwood made up the five-member team whose passion for reading catapulted them to the top. The team’s coach and teacher librarian, Sherry Day, helped prepare and encourage these students along with support from the school’s principal, Jody Swanigan.

This very special group of 8th graders became high schoolers today. They will all be missed!
Congratulations to the Class of 2024! We welcomed back our former 8th graders for a clap out parade by the whole school! Mr. Zac printed their eighth grade speeches which they read on the spot. They were so entertained by the things that have not changed like the turn-in cell phone tower and the things that have changed like the playground makeover with zip-line!
Look how big they look in our hallways! Great to see you all!
So many highlights from Field Day 2024! Tall, tall inflatable slides, MtP Fire Dept water spray, great games run by middle school mentors and amazing friends!

Look who was in the house today!
During the second semester, 4th Grade students dove into the study of the ocean and its influence on coastlines. Following this exploration, we engaged in the creation of a movement piece in honor of National Water Dance Day. The National Water Dance organization strives to utilize dance as a platform for driving social change, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental and social concerns through partnerships with artistic, educational, and scientific sectors.
Please enjoy this performance brought to you by the Boshe Grant, Ms. Meredith, and 4th Grade. 🌊

Last week was filled with journeys, but one special crew undertook a Monumental Excursion! Trekking to the Nation’s Capital is a time-honored Middle School Tradition, and the East Cooper Montessori 8th graders completed the ceremonial journey with pomp and circumstance (and a dash of delight). We hopped from Iwo Jima to multiple Smithsonian’s. We took in serene views at the Jefferson Memorial, and we reflected deeply on the accomplishments and missteps of previous presidents and statesman. True, there was ample time for boogying: the night-time river cruise was the undeniable crowd favorite. But, the traveling experience was rewarding, educationally and interpersonally. The trip to the National Holocaust Smithsonian was a stark reminder of the enormity of the events encountered by Elie Wiesel, author of Night, whose book we read earlier this year.
Even with the digital detox, our kiddos successfully interacted with students from other schools, demonstrating personal courage and charm to overcome social boundaries. While it is still too early to determine this trip’s far-reaching impacts, we encourage you to browse the photo gallery and try to unravel it together!
