MMUN (Montessori Model United Nations) is a middle school program where children can experience interacting with different cultures and have real-life experiences that involve many countries. Unfortunately, the New York trip that MMUN usually includes has been canceled due to COVID-19.

So we pivoted to a year-long virtual MMUN program for our seventh-graders. Joining Montessori students from throughout the United States and around the world to debate issues of global importance, the MMUN journey is one of the most powerful and impactful experiences offered at ECMCS!

Instead of a weekend in NYC, we are planning a meaningful weekend in Charleston. 7th Grade students will still get to experience the academic simulation of the United Nations
at the College of Charleston.

Let's also bring the fun!
They will also have a sleepover at ECMCS, Downtown Scavenger Hunt, visit James Island County Park to paddleboard, navigate high ropes, rock climb, & laugh the day away @ The Have Nots Theater 99 performance.

In honor of Earth Day, we will highlight an amazing ecosystem stop motion project made by 5th year students. Students researched ecosystems, designed habitats and animals, filmed and edited projects, in order to highlight the interdependent relationship between abiotic and biotic factors in an environment. Make sure to look for all of the special touches in this first one of how the animals catch their prey. Check out this link below. The details are incredible.

THE HIKE IN! Last week our 6th grade class traveled to GA to complete The Hike Inn. The Hike In is a sustainably-designed backcountry lodge in the North Georgia mountains. Part of Amicalola Falls State Park, the Hike Inn is only accessible by a rolling five-mile hike on a trail through the park and the Chattahoochee National Forest. The trip was challenging for students at time, but through challenge we grow. The trip helped students find the beauty and joy of hiking in wild places, foster their appreciation and respect for nature, and to help them acquire the necessary skills to enjoy these places safely.
Please enjoy this beautiful reflection video made by one of the 6th grade students.

Don't forget we are hosting the World Peace Game in June!
The World Peace Game is a hands-on political science simulation. Four countries are arrayed against each other as young players take on the roles of prime ministers, cabinet members, arms dealers, and more. The object? Achieve world peace and global prosperity by challenging students with 24 interlocking, multifaceted crises--hurricanes, oil spills, food shortages, political and economic tensions--while on the brink of armed conflict.
Game play this summer is led by WPG Facilitator Kevin Durden. The experience is founded on the ideas shared by master teacher John Hunter in World Peace and Other 4th-Grade Achievements.
Students will learn ●leadership responsibilities ●negotiation skills ●systems thinking ●creative problem-solving ●critical thinking ●collaboration skills ●conflict resolution ●communication skills ●and HAVE FUN!

East Cooper Montessori Charter proudly presents the 2022 Spring Choir Concert featuring the East Cooper Choraliers. Our Choraliers have been working so hard and are excited to perform in our FIRST concert here at ECMCS!

The Rainbow Fish Musical, presented by 5th grade students @ ECMCS, will perform on stage May 19 @ 5:30pm. All are welcome! Tickets are free of charge, but please RSVP to make sure we can accommodate everyone - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScouTApkNrMdA49s7pZ26mBVP5-3H97EyGI2ZIvPq6QZ0FKpw/viewform

With shiny, multi-colored scales, Rainbow Fish is the most beautiful fish in all of the ocean, and the only one of his kind. When Rainbow Fish refuses to share his scales, the whole ocean seems to turn against the vain creature. It takes a friendly little fish, a goofy starfish, and a helpful octopus to teach the Rainbow Fish the value of friendship...and the joy of sharing what you have with others.

A little motivation for your Monday!

Photos from East Cooper Montessori Charter School's post 03/24/2022

Our Middle School COAST beekeepers group took a field trip last week to the home of a local beekeeper, James Craig, who is caring for our hive while training our students on beekeeping.

Our bees will live at James Craig’s house until August when our driveway construction is complete. In August we will move them home to ECMCS.

Our middle school beekeepers are learning about bees, building our hives and preparing spring lessons for our younger students.

We are so very grateful to the Bee Cause Project and to James Craig from Charleston Bees. It is because of them that all of this incredible learning is possible!

What an amazingly special day for our adolescents! We kicked off our artists in residence week for our social justice project, I Am which has led our Middle School students into many meaningful experiences and conversations. We welcomed Marcus Amaker (Poet Laureate of Charleston) today who shared his poetry and led a poetry writing lesson. Many students shared their amazing poetry they created in a short lesson. We also welcomed artist, Adam Schrimmer, from Blank Canvas mural Company, who began our Grand Hall mural with our students. The theme for our mural is," Do You See What I See?" Students will continue their work throughout this week. All were inspired and motivated to embrace ourselves and others for who we are and the differences that make us unique and special!

Our 8th year students had an amazing opportunity this morning to not only go through the process of dissecting a cow eye but also to be taught how to draw medical illustrations by an expert in the medical illustration field! Thank you so much to the amazing team that made this happen, especially Rick Sargent! Check out this incredible highlight reel of their work.

ECMCS is excited to announce the selection of “The Rainbow Fish Musical” as the first ever 5th grade musical. Based on the international bestselling book by Marcus Pfister, the beautiful Rainbow Fish is on a journey of self-discovery to learn about the importance of friendship and inclusion. The Rainbow Fish’s shiny and colorful scales make all the other ocean creatures curious, and they begin to admire the Rainbow Fish, who is the only one of its kind. When the Rainbow Fish refuses to share the beautiful shiny scales and insists on only being admired, the ocean creatures lose their interest and even exclude the Rainbow Fish. Saddened and lonely, it takes a visit to the wise Octopus for the Rainbow Fish to learn that kindness is a better reason to be admired than beauty. This large-cast undersea adventure is sure to please audiences.

Teachers & staff @ ECMCS were so happy to welcome parents back into the building this week for Montessori Morning! The student led morning gave parents a glimpse into the day of a Montessori student. Parents were reminded of the peaceful Montessori environments and how independently the students were working. Thanks to everyone who was able to come and share this special time with us.
