🌿🌼 A Day of Exploring Nature! 🦋

Today our preschool and school-aged classrooms headed out on a hike to collect colorful flowers and leaves to make nature bracelets! Along the way, we had so much fun observing everything around us and talking about what we discovered.

We spotted 🦋 butterflies, 🌸 flowers, 🌿 milkweed, 🐛 signs of caterpillars munching on the milkweed, 🕷️ daddy longlegs, 🐔 chickens, 🐝 bees, mud, and tractor tracks! We even made a quick stop at the coop to visit the chickens.

After our hike, we gathered together to talk about what we saw and share our observations. The children were excited to remember all the little details from our adventure and make connections between what they see in nature and the world around them.

What a wonderful day of learning, exploring, creating, and getting a little muddy along the way! 💚🌻

The storm yesterday caused some damage in the butterfly enclosure, but the fallen chrysalis got hung right back up with some clips and dental floss 🤣

As much as we hate to see any damage, it gave the kiddos a chance to see a chrysalis up close before it went back up!

While rehanging things, Miss Lindsay noticed one of the fallen caterpillars was already turning into a chrysalis, and some of the kids got to watch the magic of nature happen in real time! 🐛✨

He'll rest on his leaf hammock until the chrysalis hardens, then he'll get hung up too.

We have a chrysalis!!! 🦋✨

The magic is officially happening at Thistle Nook! Our very first monarch chrysalis has formed and we are absolutely over the moon! 🌿💚

Inside that tiny jade green shell, something truly extraordinary is taking place. One of our caterpillars has begun its incredible transformation and we will be watching and waiting every single day! 👀

Nature is the most amazing classroom. 🌱✨

🐛🦋 Big news in our garden — our first monarch caterpillar is getting ready to transform!

We noticed he made his way to the top of his enclosure and has been hanging in a "J" shape, which is his way of telling us a chrysalis is coming soon!

Over the next day or so, he'll shed his striped skin one final time, revealing a beautiful jade-green chrysalis underneath. From there, it'll take about 10-14 days before a butterfly emerges.

We'll be watching closely and sharing updates as our little friend continues this amazing journey. Stay tuned! 🌿✨

It is that time of year and our hearts are a little heavy today! 🥺💛

Today we say see you later to the wonderful Miss Sidney as she heads back to school for her senior year! Miss Sidney brought so much warmth, energy, and joy to Thistle Nook this summer and our kiddos absolutely adored her!

We are so proud of everything she is working toward and we cannot wait to see the incredible early childhood educator she is going to become! 🌿✨

Miss Sidney — thank you for pouring your heart into our little ones this summer. You will always have a place in the Thistle Nook family and we are already hoping you come back to us next summer! 🌻💚

We are rooting for you every single step of the way! 👏

Tie Dye Day was an absolute HIT! 🌈🎨

Yesterday our kiddos got their hands colorful and their creativity flowing during our very own Tie Dye Day! Squeezing, swirling, and soaking every inch of their shirts in every color of the rainbow — they took this activity and RAN with it! 💜💙💚

We cannot wait to see the final reveals and we know you are just as excited as we are! Once those shirts are washed and unwrapped, drop a photo in the comments — we want to see every single one! 👇📸✨

🦋 BIG NEWS, Thistle Nook families! 🦋

We are so excited to share that Thistle Nook Nature Playschool has officially been accepted as a certified Monarch Waystation! 🎉

This certification comes through the 250 New Monarch Waystations in America's Laurel Highlands project, in partnership with Monarch Watch — a national program dedicated to protecting monarch butterflies by preserving and creating habitats along their incredible migration route.

Our garden officially provides the milkweed, nectar sources, and shelter monarchs need to survive and reproduce as they travel thousands of miles across North America. 🌼🐛🦋

This wouldn't have been possible without all the growing, watching, and wondering our kiddos have done in the garden this summer — from watching our own caterpillars grow in our enclosure to learning about pollinators up close. What a perfect way to celebrate everything they've learned!

We can't wait to keep watching our garden do its part in supporting monarch conservation, one flutter at a time. 🧡🖤

Nature leaves the sweetest little surprises! 🌿💚

While exploring our trails we spotted this little gem — a tiny heart shaped hole on one of our milkweed leaves, left behind by a hungry monarch caterpillar! 🦋❤️

A little reminder that even the smallest creatures leave their mark on the world in the most beautiful ways. Keep your eyes open on the trails, friends — you never know what wonders are waiting to be found! 🌱✨

🐛 MONARCH WATCH AT THISTLE NOOK! 🦋

Big excitement in our outdoor classroom this week! We're watching monarch eggs and FOUR tiny caterpillars grow right before our eyes in our butterfly enclosure! 🌿

Here's what our friends are learning about monarch life:
🥚 It all starts as a tiny egg, no bigger than a pinhead, laid on a milkweed leaf
🐛 When a caterpillar hatches, its very first meal is its own eggshell!
🌱 Monarch caterpillars ONLY eat milkweed. Nothing else will do!
📏 A caterpillar grows so fast it sheds its skin 5 times before it's ready to form a chrysalis
✨ In just 1-2 weeks, this tiny striped caterpillar will be big enough to transform completely

Our kiddos have been checking in daily, measuring growth, and practicing patience as we wait to see who spins their chrysalis first! Such a great hands-on lesson in life cycles, responsibility, and the wonder of nature. 🍃
