You can learn the principles. Study the Ethics Code. Pass the exam. Know your terminology backward and forward.

And then you become a BCBA and realize how often the real world hands you two imperfect options and asks you to make a clinically, ethically, and socially meaningful decision 💭

That part of becoming a BCBA is much harder to teach in a classroom.

What should the next standard in ABA be?

Not another checkbox. Not another buzzword. Not another expensive online program.

A higher standard for how we practice, how we lead, how we respond to feedback, how we use technology, how we share what we know, and how we treat the other people in our field.

We talk a lot about shaping behavior. We should be just as willing to take a look at our own.

The Gold Standard isn’t something we arrive at. We keep raising it.

How do you find your niche in behavior analysis—and how much can the right mentor shape the direction of your career?

We were incredibly pleased to welcome Dr. Patrick C. Friman to The Gold Standard Podcast.

Dr. Friman has made an extraordinary contribution to our field. A former President of the Association for Behavior Analysis International and former Editor of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, he has published extensively across behavioral pediatrics, behavioral medicine, and applied behavior analysis and has spent decades working to extend the reach and relevance of behavioral science.

But for this conversation, we went back to where that career began.

Dr. Friman shares the story of how he found his niche, the role mentorship played in shaping his path, and how those early experiences helped lead him toward the work for which he would become so well known.

There is something especially valuable about hearing someone who has accomplished so much in our science talk about the period when they were still figuring out where they belonged in it.

We recently welcomed our newest team members to BDA ahead of the new school year. Ready, Set, September was a chance to bring new hires together with members of our team, get familiar with BDA, and spend some time getting to know the people they’ll be working alongside.

Events like this are an important part of building our culture. As BDA continues to grow, it becomes even more important to create opportunities for people to connect beyond their day-to-day work. The relationships we build with our coworkers shape the way we communicate, collaborate, and ultimately work together.

RBT renewal requirements changed in 2026 — and PDUs are now part of the process.

RBTs need 12 Professional Development Units (PDUs) every two-year certification cycle, but not every training or professional development activity counts.

We broke down the basics: how PDUs can be earned, what topics may qualify, what doesn’t count, and why keeping your documentation matters.

Sometimes becoming a better BCBA has less to do with learning more and more to do with unlearning the habits that no longer serve our clients, teams, or ourselves.

Stay curious. Stay flexible. Follow the data. And never get so attached to being “right” that you stop being willing to learn.

You might be a BCBA if your “free time” somehow turns into more work. 😂

A canceled meeting? Catch up on notes.
A flight delay? Perfect time for a reauthorization.
Lunch? You’re analyzing a graph between bites.
A few minutes before session? Just enough time to check some data… unless Instagram has other plans.

BCBAs have mastered the art of finding productivity in every tiny gap in the day.

And occasionally, doing absolutely nothing during that gap is probably the most socially significant behavior change of all. 😅
