EXCITING NEWS FOR CHRISTIAN WRITERS!

Plans are now in the works for Christian Writers Retreats to partner with the Mount Hermon Women’s Reflective Retreat for a Christian Writers Reflective Retreat. (I’ve attended the MH reflective retreat several times, and they are always amazing times of powerful connections with the Lord, providing incredible spiritual refreshment and encouragement.)

Next February, for the first time, Mount Hermon will be hosting a reflective retreat designed specifically for specialty groups. Christian Writers Retreats will be one of the founding groups at this initial event, alongside other groups. Everyone will experience the soul-care elements of the retreat together, while each group will have time to customize and specialize portions of the event for their own needs as well.

We will have a full day of writing-centered sessions and activities on Friday, February 2. On Saturday we’ll gather with the other MH reflective retreat groups for a day of focused spiritual reflection. Sunday morning will combine worship and communion, followed by a separate wrap-up session for our Christian Writers Retreat participants.

Unlike many writers’ conferences, with focus on training and networking, this writers’ retreat will focus on preparing your soul for God’s calling on your life and your writing, grounding your heart through prayer, quiet time, and spiritual direction. And as the Holy Spirit prompts, you can spend time making progress on whatever the Lord has called you to write.

Being early in the calendar year, this will be a great opportunity to listen intently for God’s direction and prepare yourself for whatever the Lord has in mind for you and your writing in the new year.

As details unfold, we’ll be announcing them on the Christian Writers Retreat at Mount Hermon page and posting them on the Christian Writers Retreats website.

I am super excited about this special event. Mark your calendar for February 2–4, 2024. Hope to see you at the first Mount Hermon Writers Reflective Retreat!

Thanks so much to everyone who provided feedback on the idea of a Mount Hermon writers retreat. I received enough positive responses to consider that a "green light" to move on to the next step!

What I need now is to put together a resource team. I can't put something like this together all on my own. I don't have enough time to do it all, and I certainly don't have the skill set for each area that's required to make this a success.

Here are the areas I will need help with:
Graphics Designer
Website Designer/Creator
Social Media Coordinator
Registration Coordinator
Transportation Coordinator
Printed Materials Designer
Prayer Team (Leader and Members)

If you have interest and expertise in any of the above areas, please email me to get a job description/task list.

I look forward to working with the team that God is going to put together for this retreat!

I woke up on this beautiful Palm Sunday morning thanking God for sending His Son to live on this earth, go to the cross, and rise from the dead to reconcile us with Him. But I must admit, my heart was also heavy with sorrow and grief over not being able to celebrate this holy day at my beloved Mount Hermon. Sitting in that beautiful sanctuary singing hymns with my wonderful writer friends. Then wandering among the redwoods, listening to God’s voice, fellowshipping with old friends and new, and making the connections God had preordained so I could take the next step in the journey He has planned for me.

Last February, when COVID-19 first hit, I received the heart-wrenching news that the Mount Hermon Association had decided to no longer sponsor the writers’ conference—not just until after the pandemic but indefinitely. Skipping 2020 was a necessity. This year, with restrictions on group gatherings still in place in California, I’m glad we didn’t try to schedule something for 2021. But with the end of the pandemic finally in sight, the thought of not planning a Mount Hermon Christian Writers’ Conference for next year—or ever again—seems beyond tragic.

I know many others feel the same way.

I don’t know whether there’s a chance that the Mount Hermon Association might reconsider. But I would like to let them know how much this writers’ conference means to those of us who have come to cherish it. If you’d like to join in this effort, please email me at [email protected] with whatever you’d like to say to the decision-makers about what this conference means to you, what it has done for you, how you believe it has affected the family of God, and why you long for it to return. Your response can be short or long, observations or anecdotes, a prayer … whatever you feel led to share. I will combine all the responses I get and then forward them to the people I worked with at Mount Hermon when I was directing the conference.

The reason I was given for cancelling our event was that Mount Hermon wanted to focus on their core ministry: families. The writers’ conference was viewed as a professional event, and there are many similar conferences across the country. So while what you might value most is that you found your agent there, you may want to include in your comments something about the uniqueness of the Mount Hermon conference and how the connections you made there can greatly impact God’s kingdom.

Please send me your thoughts on what the Mount Hermon Christian Writers’ Conference means to you, what’s so special about it, and why you want it to return no later than April 10. I’d like to compile the responses and send them to the folks at Mount Hermon by April 15. If they decide to bring the conference back in spring of 2021, we’ll need to start planning right away.

Please pass this on to anyone you know who has been impacted by the Mount Hermon writers’ conference and may want to add their comments. Share about it on your social media, in your newsletter, however you think it will reach the most people. The more we can show the eternal value of this special event, the greater an influence we might have on changing this decision.

Above all, please pray for the future of the Mount Hermon Christian Writers’ Conference. God can work a miracle to bring it back if it is His will.

Praising the Lord that the CZU Lightning Complex Fires in the San Mateo and Santa Cruz Counties, which resulted in evacuations of the Mount Hermon residents and staff, is now 97% contained, expected to be fully contained by the end of the weekend. Thanking the Lord for protecting our beloved conference center.

It devoured over 86,00 acres and destroyed 1,490 structures, including 925 homes in the area around Mount Hermon. Please pray for the individuals and families who have been affected by these fires.

Please also pray for those who are still in danger from the many other fires ravaging California, Washington, Oregon, and Colorado.

And please continue to pray for the Mount Hermon Association, which is still unable to hold group events due to the coronavirus.

As you probably heard, the Kickstarter campaign for reviving the Mount Hermon writers conference did not reach its goal of $200,000. Which means Steve Laube's company will not be sponsoring the conference next spring.

We did get a little over $163,000 in pledges, which tells me there's a lot of interest in the conference, even in the midst of this crazy season we're in. I find that encouraging.

And to be honest, the thought of starting now to plan a large, in-person event next March doesn't seem prudent with all the uncertainty we're in the midst of.

Once the pandemic restrictions and concerns are behind us (whenever that might be), we will be prayerfully considering what the Lord might be directing us to do for writers at Mount Hermon. In the meantime, please continue praying for divine protection of the conference center. God saved MH from the CZU fire that caused evacuations of the area for about a week. We are trusting that He will also help MH survive the ongoing COVID-19 financial crisis.

If you pledged to the Kickstarter program, the amount you pledged will not be charged. Would you perhaps consider donating that amount (or a portion thereof) to Mount Hermon to help the ministry continue? https://www.mounthermon.org/give

If you'd like to be on a mailing list to be notified of news about future writers' events at Mount Hermon, please email me at [email protected]. I will also be posting here on Facebook, so check here from time to time as well.

I look forward to the day when we will look back on this time and praise the Lord for His mighty hand and His perfect plan. I'm so glad we serve a God who is powerful enough to bring good out of anything!
