Jo-Carroll Recycling Event – Saturday April 18

Northwest Illinois residents and businesses are invited to participate in the upcoming recycling collection set for Saturday, April 18, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the rear parking area of the Elizabeth Community Building, located just off U.S. Route 20, at 330 N. West Street, Elizabeth, Illinois.

Car and standard light truck tires including tires on rims will be accepted at this event. A recycling and transfer fee of $10 per tire will be collected. ATV, lawn mower and other similar small tires will also be accepted for $10 each.

Curbside household recycling is also available. For a fee of $10 per household, a single stream recycling dumpster will be available. Eligible items for drop off include consumer glass bottles and jars, consumer plastics and metal cans, cardboard and paper including magazines, junk mail, newspapers.

Paper shredding is not available at the event. Also, no paint or household hazardous waste items will be accepted.

A recycling fee of $1.00 per lb. is charged for all small batteries or rechargeable and power unit batteries. These batteries will be weighed at the event to determine the fee amount. Large lead-acid batteries will be accepted for free.

Electronics with a screen of any kind will be collected for a $25 fee per item. This would include computer monitors/screens, laptops, and all types of televisions. Large household appliances will be accepted for $10 each and include refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, microwaves, etc.

Compact and large fluorescent lights will also be accepted with bulbs under 4 feet costing $ 1.00 each and larger bulbs costing $2.00 each.

Our Largest Event in Years!

A BIG thank you to all who participated in today's recycling event. We took in several tons of metal scrap, many appliances, a 100 TVs and screens, 2 riding lawnmowers, pounds of batteries and about 30 tires.

Illinois EPA Fall Waste Collection Events

Illinois EPA has announced several upcoming Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) one day collection locations for the Fall of 2024. These collection events are co-sponsored by units of local government and provide residents the free opportunity to safely dispose of unused or leftover hazardous products commonly found in homes.

One-day collections are open to all Illinois residents and operate from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the day of the event. Pre-registration is required for all Fall 2024 collection events. Residents participating are encouraged to bring chemical cleaners, oil-based paints, thinners, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, kerosene, w**d killers, insecticides, and pesticides, and similar hazardous household products. Fluorescent and other high-intensity discharge lamps may also be brought to the collections. ITEMS NOT ACCEPTED include latex paint, explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, agricultural chemicals, and business wastes. For safe transport of HHW, residents are asked to:
• Pack HHW items in a disposable box to avoid spilling during transport.
• Keep like chemicals together and separate unlike chemicals.
• Secure lids and make sure containers are not leaking.
• Place box(es) of HHW in the empty trunk or storage compartment of your vehicle, away from passengers during transport.
• Remain in vehicle at collection site. On-site personnel will remove the HHW from your vehicle.

On-site paper shredding of confidential documents is also being offered with a $10 fee for the quantity of one standard computer paper box or less. Each additional box can be shredded for an extra $10 per box. Items for shredding will need to have any binder or paper clips removed.

IDOA Free Recycling Program for Agrichemical Containers

The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) encourages farmers and agrichemical facilities to take part in a free agrichemical container recycling program. Beginning in the middle of July and continuing into August, sites throughout the state will collect containers that are recycled to make shipping pallets.

Participants are responsible for rinsing containers and removing all caps, valves, metal, labels, booklets and foil seals. Participants are also responsible for cutting off the top and bottom of plastic drums and cutting the side of the drum from top to bottom. Mini-Bulk and Intermediate Bulk containers can be recycled via the IDOA’s
container recycling program by making the following container preparations: Mini Bulk (cage) containers are required to be cut into separate top, bottom and sides, fittings discarded (no metal, no wood) (6 slabs of plastic).

Intermediate Bulk Containers are to be cut in to 1-foot square pieces, fittings discarded (no metal, no wood). G. Phillips and Sons, L.L.C. is offering services to pick up Mini-Bulk and Intermediate Bulk containers throughout the year. Feel free to contact G.
