🪲🪰🐜 Week Eight Spotlight 🦗🐞🕷

Here’s a look at what we learned last week! From hands-on activities to meaningful discussions, we spent the week exploring new skills, discovering fresh ideas, and building on what we’ve already learned. We’re excited to share the moments, lessons, and highlights that made last week so engaging and memorable!

📖 In Language arts, students explored the concept of main idea and supporting details in this week’s class. We identified themes using Main Idea Bags, matched task cards, and rotated through engaging puzzles and cup stacking activities to practice connecting main ideas with details. The lesson concluded with a leaf rubbing journal activity and a reading of “Cricket in Times Square.”

🌍In history/social studies class, students learned about maps and their features by exploring continents, oceans, countries, and different types of maps. Through hands-on activities, we sorted maps, located places on a globe, practiced using a compass rose and map scale, and created maps of their own classroom. We ended our time together by adding items to a large road map to apply what we learned together.

🔢For math, students studied fractions by identifying the parts of a fraction and matching illustrations to their correct values. We practiced recognizing and creating fractions such as ½, ⅓, and ¼ through hands-on activities, including making pie charts and playing a roll-and-cover game. The lesson ended with an M&M activity to explore fractions in a fun, real-world way.

🔬Finally, in science class, students investigated all about spiders by reading a spider-themed book and discussing what makes a spider unique. We created spider webs, sorted insects and spiders by the number of legs, and played interactive games like “Spider Roll & Add” and “Pin the Leg on the Spider” to review and reinforce our learning.

This week students explored Proverbs 30:24–28 and discussed how small creatures show great wisdom through their actions. They reflected on how these examples teach us to value diligence, teamwork, preparation, and perseverance in our own lives.

🪲🪰🐜 Week Seven Spotlight 🦗🐞🕷

This week students stayed busy learning, creating, and exploring through hands-on activities and lots of fun. Take a peek at some of the adventures below! 📚✨

📖 In Language arts, students learned all about end and inside punctuation with a fun song, grouping punctuation marks, completing sentences on whiteboards, and adding punctuation to their journals with colored pencils. We shifted focused to comma rules through sorting charts and creative activities like adding macaroni noodles to lists. We ended with “Pin the Missing Comma on the Sentence” and more of The Cricket in Times Square.

🌍In history/social studies class, students explored how transportation and communication have changed over time by comparing “then” and “now” images, creating models of past and present vehicles, and adding newspaper findings to a class chart. We also looked at the future by drawing future vehicles and building a progression timeline. Our time together concluded with a collaborative project of creating a past and future town.

🔢For math, students were introduced to measuring length through using nonstandard units such as snap cubes, paper clips, and bear counters. We also investigated with different measurement tools and participated in a scavenger hunt to estimate and record the length, width, and height of various objects. Our class wrapped up with a butterfly-themed review game and a round of “Measurement Bingo.”

🔬Finally, in science class, students examined butterflies and moths through discussing metamorphosis, creating a butterfly life cycle project, exploring symmetry, and identifying butterfly types in a scavenger hunt. We also examined the Luna moth through a close read and compared butterflies and moths using a Venn diagram. We concluded with a sorting review game and a lively “Fruit Basket Upset” activity featuring butterflies, moths, and caterpillars.

This week students explored Proverbs 30:24–28 and discussed how small creatures show great wisdom through their actions. They reflected on how these examples teach us to value diligence, teamwork, preparation, and perseverance in our own lives.

🪲🪰🐜 Week Six Spotlight 🦗🐞🕷

📖 In Language arts, students explored rhyming words through a variety of activities, like reading a rhyming book and playing “I Spy a Rhyme.” Our centers featured rhyming rockets, a board game, and dominoes. We also identified rhymes and ending blends with Rhyming Legos, a rhyming jar, and clip games. We ended our time with an exciting game of “Fruit Basket Upset” and another chapter of The Cricket in Times Square.

🌍 In history/social studies class, students were introduced to the concept of fact versus opinion by sorting cards, completing an ice cream-themed activity, and responding to a slideshow using fact/opinion paddles. We also focused on pumpkin investigation science through counting seeds, testing whether pumpkins float, and experimenting with a pumpkin battery and volcano. We concluded with a fun “hot potato” game using a pumpkin!

🚒 In lieu of math, our morning featured the Safety Awareness Fair, with a visit from the Mount Bethel Department Fire Truck and Civil Air Patrol. Throughout the event, students engaged in hands-on learning stations focused on road, home, cyber, and traffic safety, as well as understanding when and how to call for help. Each participant had the opportunity to explore real-world safety skills in a fun, interactive way.

🔬Finally, in science class, students learned about the unique features of dragonflies and flies by practicing sight words with fly swatters, exploring how compound eyes work, and creating a fun craft. We also reinforced math skills through a variety of dragonfly and fly-themed addition games. Students played a review game of “Hot Potato” with a pumpkin and ended our time together with a fun dragonfly food chain game.

This week students reflected on Psalm 119:103, “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Through various activities, lessons, and discussions, students were able to connect the verse’s meaning to the idea that Scripture nourishes the heart just as sweetness delights the taste.

🪲🪰🐜 Week Five Spotlight 🦗🐞🕷

We are half way through our first session! Time flies (or buzzes by) when you're having fun learning! Take a peek into our buzzing activities this week:

📖 In Language arts, students practiced capitalization skills by learning the M.I.N.T.S. rule (Months, I, Names, Titles, Start of Sentence) and applied it in various interactive exercises and games. We also did centers that included rewriting sentences, creating word collages, and identifying capitals in a bee-themed text. We ended with a fun review game and some more reading of "The Cricket in Times Square".

🌍In history/social studies class, students learned about timelines by playing a number line game and sorting events into past, present, and future categories. They also worked on sequencing photos, completing an American history timeline, and using task cards. The class then shifted to investigating pumpkin seeds and creating a pumpkin battery experiment. The class concluded with a fun “candy timeline” activity and a review game.

🔢For math, students explored addition through bee-themed board games and 2D/3D geometric shapes. They also used geoboards, pattern blocks, and “Make Me” tasks to build and identify shapes. After eating geometric snacks, students sorted 2D and 3D figures and created a geometric booklet. We wrapped up with students making shapes from playdough and guessed each other’s creations.

🔬Finally, in science class, students investigated about bees through hands-on activities, including painting wooden bees and reading informational posters and texts. During group discussions, students discovered what bees can, have, and are. After learning about wasps, they compared and contrasted different types of bees and completed a bee pollination STEAM project by creating hive prints with toilet paper rolls.

🪲🪰🐜 Week Four Spotlight 🦗🐞🕷

📖 In Language arts, students learned about punctuation through movement, games, and creative activities. They searched for punctuation in texts, built sentence puzzles, and practiced using punctuation with our special snack. We also worked in our journals, played a punctuation ring toss review game, continued the bug hotel project, and ended with more reading of "The Cricket in Times Square".

🌍In history/social studies class, students explored scarab beetles through reading, discussion, and hands-on art. After learning about dung beetles, they read and analyzed a short text, created fact charts, and discussed how ancient Egyptians used scarabs as symbols while learning about the one true God from Scripture. They made scarabs from model magic, played a beetle-themed fruit basket game, and created metallic scarabs with foil.

🔢For math, students dove into the world of skip counting! After bug-themed warm-up games, they learned to skip count by 2s and 5s using popsicle sticks, painted handprints, and number lines. They also practiced 3s and 10s with themed board games, 10 frames, and a ladybug counting craft. The lesson wrapped up with a review game using paper plates and a fun skip-counting bean bag toss.

🔬Finally, in science class, students used games, crafts, and creative play to investigate about ladybugs, fireflies, and rhino beetles. They explored the ladybug life cycle, played tic-tac-toe, made glowing firefly crafts, and learned beetle anatomy with labeling and drawing activities. We ended our class by putting the final touches on our bug hotels. Be on the lookout in the next week or two when we will place our bug hotels outside.

In each class, students focused on the Bible Verse found in Proverbs 6:6, "Go to the ant, consider its ways, and be wise!" Through this verse, our students are learning how ants can teach us to be wise in life!
