As February comes to a close, our final Black History Month feature is Arthur Mitchell!

“Dancer, choreographer and artistic director Arthur Mitchell was born on March 27, 1934 in Harlem, New York. After graduating from high school in 1952, Mitchell received scholarships to attend the Dunham School and the School of American Ballet. He joined John Butler’s dance company in Europe before the general director of the New York City Ballet (NYCB), invited him to join NYCB’s corps de ballet. Mitchell became the first African American permanent member of a major American ballet company in 1955. Then, in 1957, famed ballet choreographer George Balanchine choreographed Agon pas de deux, considered to be the first in*******al duet in American ballet, for Mitchell and Diana Adams. Balanchine choreographed the role of Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Mitchell, as Mitchell performed in a succession of NYCB productions, including Bugaku and Arcade. In 1966, Mitchell organized the American Negro Dance Company, which represented the U.S. at the first World Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar, Senegal. Mitchell then founded the National Ballet Company of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro in 1968. Mitchell, with mentor and friend Karel Shook, co-founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem in 1969, the first black classical ballet company, which debuted at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City in 1971. When the Dance Theatre of Harlem performed in South Africa in 1992, it launched its international outreach program, Dancing Through Barriers, designed to educate children in dance through master classes and open rehearsals.”

Our third Black History Month feature is Pearl Primus!

“Pearl Primus, dancer and choreographer, was born on November 29th, 1919, in Trinidad. Her parents immigrated to the United States in 1921 when Pearl was still a small child. Primus’s promise as a dancer was recognized quickly, and she received a scholarship from the National Youth Association’s New Dance Group in 1941. She soon began performing professionally both as a soloist and in dance groups around New York. In 1948 Primus received a federal grant to study dance, and used the money to travel around Africa and the Caribbean to learn different styles of native dance, which she then brought back to the United States to perform and teach. She also choreographed dances that contained messages about racism and discrimination. Eventually Primus formed her own dance troupe which toured the nation, and she opened a dance school in Harlem to train younger performers. Pearl Primus continued to teach, choreograph, and perform dances that spoke of the human struggle and of the African American struggle in a world of racism. In 1978, she completed her doctoral degree in dance education at New York University’s School of Education.”

Our next Black History Month feature is famous tap dancer and choreographer, Savion Glover!

“Famous tap dancer, choreographer, and actor Savion Glover is the epitome of a living legend. Born in 1973, the tapping marvel has graced the stage since childhood. He set a record as the youngest person ever to receive a scholarship in the Newark Community School of the Arts. Before he was a teenager, Savion made his mark starring in the leading role in the Broadway musical The Tap Dance Kid. As a choreographer, Glover’s work has helped maintain tap dancing as an art form in the modern dance world. His starring role in the musical Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk, which he also choreographed, debuted on Broadway in 1996. The musical chronicles events in African-American history and brought Savion a Tony for Best Choreographer. Glover’s quick steps and amazing rhythms continue to influence the lives of young people.”

Happy 2/2 day!! Our first Black History Month feature is ballerina, Raven Wilkinson!

Raven Wilkinson was the first African American woman to receive a full-time contract with a major ballet company, the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. She joined Ballet Russe in 1955 at age 20 and performed several leading roles, but because the company primarily toured, she experienced extreme racism during their time in the Deep South. Wilkinson endured extreme hardship that little to no other dancers in the company understood at the time, but her colleagues in the company constantly protected and supported her. She was truly a trailblazing ballerina, and eventually became a mentor for Misty Copeland, the first African American Principal Dancer at American Ballet Theater.
