Part 2/3 – The Build — I built a six-figure guiding business on the side… then I sold it. ⛰️➡️🏃

Climbing pulled me into the mountains, and in 2017 I started Golden State Guiding — nights and weekends, while still working a 9-5 in the surf industry. The focus was never just the business — it was the community and the guide team we built together, backed by professional training through AMGA, AIARE, and wilderness medicine.

Then I sold it. Just like that.

It wasn’t just a business deal — it felt like losing a piece of me. But I wanted something simpler, and more time with my family. Enter: Cirque Running. I’m still guiding, still coaching, still giving back — just in a different form.

The hardest thing I ever did was also the smartest.

Deer Lakes, tucked behind Mammoth Lakes Basin, might just be one of my favorite, shorter distance trails in the Sierra. This trail has a little bit of everything and is relatively close to town.
