Chesterton Academy of the Willamette Valley

Chesterton Academy of the Willamette Valley ⚜️A joyfully classical high school in the Catholic tradition located in Mount Angel, Oregon⚜️ What is the Chesterton Network of Schools? Chesterton

A collaborative venture of the American Chesterton Society and Chesterton Academy, the Chesterton Schools Network aims to inspire and encourage parent-led Catholic schools across the nation. The Network offers consulting services; templates for evaluating interest and operating a school; and the Chesterton Academy curriculum framework. The Chesterton Academy curriculum framework includes a four-ye

ar, sequential, integrated curriculum overview with high level day-to-day lesson plans, reading lists, and sample tests. The framework provides school founders with a blueprint for marketing, hiring and evaluating faculty, resource acquisition, scheduling, and assessing state requirements. What are Chesterton Academies like? All Chesterton Academies are independent high schools that utilize the award-winning curriculum model of the founding Chesterton Academy in Edina, MN. Chesterton Academy was recognized by Cardinal Newman Society’s Catholic Education Honor Roll as a 2014 School of Excellence, an honor given to less than five percent of the Catholic high schools in the United States. Schools receiving this designation are marked by the integration of Catholic identity throughout all aspects of their programs and excellence in academics. Chesterton Academies participate in the Network of Chesterton Academy schools allows for “best practice” in operational procedures. All Network schools define education in a more comprehensive way than other educational efforts and are faithful to the Church. We define the human person in totality, as body and soul, created in the Image of God. The purpose of education therefore, begins with the end purpose in mind. Thus, the purpose is to impart truth and training for the complete person, to help one journey to salvation. All the Academies offer a classical education taught in the tradition of the Catholic faith. This means it’s liberal arts as opposed to vocational, and eternal in purpose as opposed to merely temporal. Chesterton Academy is not just job training, but an education of informing the intellect and training the will. Faith and reason meet in every class. Quote of the Day
“Education is simply the soul of society as it passes from one generation to another.” G.K.

This summer, students spent two days at the farm of Mr. Matt Edmonds, a Chesterton teacher, where work, fellowship, and service came together in a new tradition.

Mr. Edmonds hosted a men’s wood-cutting, splitting, and camping event for current students, incoming freshmen, and Headmaster Nick Plato.

The group began early each day, spending long hours cutting, splitting, stacking, and delivering firewood. (In true Chesterton fashion, there was still time for frisbee and plenty of good-natured fun between the hard work.)

In the evening, they shared dinner around an open fire and camped under the stars. The experience reflected Chesterton’s Agrarian Vision, which emphasizes engagement with the natural world, the formation of a strong work ethic, service to others, and a balanced rhythm of work, fellowship, and rest.

For students, the event provided practical formation in cooperation, problem-solving, and fellowship.

The firewood delivered during the project will support local Chesterton families, making the effort both formative and directly beneficial to the school community.

We are grateful to Mr. Edmonds for hosting the group at his farm and for helping establish what we hope will become a lasting Chesterton tradition! ⚜️

“The more enduring revival of the classics won’t happen in the theaters. It will happen around family tables.”

At Chesterton, freshmen read Homer’s The Odyssey as part of their literature curriculum. Our hope is that the great books we study become shared family experiences, sparking conversations about truth, beauty, goodness, and what it means to live well.

America's fascination with Homer suggests adults are hungry for a kind of formation classical education has been offering all along

Senior Capstone Spotlight

Each year, seniors at Chesterton Academy of the Willamette Valley complete a Senior Capstone Project, pursuing an academic, artistic, or service endeavor that reflects their interests and the culmination of their education.

For her Capstone Project, senior Mary Rolfe partnered with Catholic Community Services Oregon - CCS to serve St. Brigid Home, part of Father Taaffe Homes and Pregnancy Support Services, located just next door to our school.

Through generous community donations and months of planning and coordination, Mary transformed living spaces for young mothers, creating peaceful, welcoming rooms where they can find comfort, dignity, and hope.

We are proud of Mary's compassion, creativity, and dedication, and grateful to everyone who donated to help bring her vision to life.
