Announcing the “In Memory of George Floyd ISR Tuition Scholarship.” I am horrified and heartbroken as I read the news about the tragic end to Mr. Floyd’s life. The racial and economic inequality faced by African Americans is terrible. The drowning statistics for children show additional racial disparities. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1-4 and per the CDC, African American children in this age range are 1.4 times more likely to drown. Unfortunately the disparity continues to grow. Per the CDC article “swimming pool drowning rates among blacks aged 5-19 are 5.5 times higher than whites in the same age group.”

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6319a2.htm

In Mr. Floyd’s memory I will donate my time to teach life saving swimming skills to African American children. Registration with ISR is required before lessons begin. Please contact me for details on the program for ages 6 months to six years and available swim start dates and times. [email protected].

Dear Friends, I’m making homemade masks to help slow the spread of the Coronavirus. They are free but I do want to prioritize health care workers and first responders. Please let me know how many you need and your occupation. I am healthy and have been practicing social distancing but will also wash all masks before I distribute. If you have a sewing machine, I’m happy to share instructions on how to make them. I had a bit of a learning curve but it’s going faster now.!

With spring around the corner, many people including kids will be heading to the water. I’m often asked by parents to explain “dry drowning. “ Read this article for an excellent discussion of the topic. Here’s one quote worth considering:

“Think of it this way: If someone develops pneumonia related to food entering the lungs during a choking episode days earlier, he has not experienced "foodless choking." That term makes no more sense than "dry drowning."

What does drowning look like? As many head to the pool, lake or beach this weekend, please remember that drowning is frequently silent. It can be very hard to see a child in distress in a crowded noisy environment. Flotation devices provide a false sense of security because 1. Very young children don’t understand that they can’t swim without them 2. They teach the wrong body posture so kids try to swim vertically rather than horizontally. Vigilant supervision is always necessary for kids with access to water. Please also consider swim lessons that include learning to attain and maintain a float. I wish everyone a safe and fun Memorial Day Weekend!

Will my children learn to swim and enjoy the water at ISR or is it survival only? Great question, and they sure will! 🙂 Each ISR student is given the skills they would need to save their own lives --which also serves as the foundation for safe participation in swim teams, pool parties, and days at the beach.

Focused supervision remains the #1 step for water safety. Wishing everyone a safe holiday weekend.

Nothing beats effective supervision. While little ones showing off their ISR Skills with a big smile is really impressive, heading into a long holiday weekend, please remember that effective supervision is the most vital part of water safety for families. All too often, we hear of tragedies resulting from a mistaken belief that "someone else" was watching. Let's team up to make this Memorial Day weekend both safe AND fun.

For this and more tips to keep your family safe in and around the water please visit our ISR Family Aquatic Safety page here: http://www.infantswim.com/water-safety/water-safety-information.html

Infant Swimming Resource

Pool season is right around the corner. Are your little ones ready? Contact me for more information about my survival swimming lessons for children 6 months and older.

To rest and breathe on your back in the water until help arrives, you have to be able to get there. The first thing little ones learn to do in ISR lessons is to float on their backs. Once they can float, their ISR Instructor gently guides them through what it takes to rollover and get to their newly learned float until they can do it all by themselves... eventually while fully clothed. To find out more, and an Instructor near you, please visit www.infantswim.com

02/21/2018

Registration for the 2018 season is underway. Contact me to schedule refresher or initial training.

Why do you recommend I bring my child back 6 months from now? It’s a great question! We recommend bringing your ISR star back to her ISR Instructor so we can make sure her ISR skills “fit” her growing body. If your little one(s) learned to rollback and float last year, it may be time to learn the full ISR swim-float-swim sequence!

What is your child learning when they are in the water? Do they respect the water, realize that it requires work on their part and know how to safely engage in an aquatic environment? Or do they think it’s just fun and games with no effort required? Take a look at the attached to see what young children can do themselves with effective instruction.

At 22 months, Jack knows the full ISR Self-Rescue® sequence which means he will swim a short distance, roll over onto his back to rest and breathe, then flip back over to continue swimming. 😀
