Congratulations to Vertebrate Ecology Lab grad students Emma Nicholson and Taylor Azizeh who were both awarded 2022 CSU Council on Ocean Affairs, Science & Technology (COAST) Graduate Student Research Awards!

These competitive $3,000 research grants will help support their Moss Landing Marine Laboratories thesis projects. Emma’s thesis will focus on harbor seal habitat use in Elkhorn Slough while Taylor’s thesis will explore the foraging ecology of emperor penguins in Antarctica 🦭🐧🎉

Vertebrate Ecology Lab grad students Shawn Hannah and Lauren Cooley have spent the last few days in Philadelphia, PA attending the annual Experimental Biology conference . Today they presented the results of their respective thesis projects- both focused on different aspects of elephant seal physiology!

It’s a beautiful day for some fieldwork! 🦭🌾🌊

For her master’s thesis, VEL grad student Emma Nicholson is conducting harbor seal surveys around Elkhorn Slough to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of these shy pinnipeds. In these photos, Emma is joined in the field by her trusty team of volunteer seal spotters- Jack, Taylor, Grace, and Sophie.

Happy New Year from the Vertebrate Ecology Lab!

In 2021 we spent a lot of time in the field and on Zoom, gained two new grad students (Amber Diluzio and Taylor Azizeh) and one post-doc (Caitlin Kroeger), celebrated Jenn Tackaberry’s thesis defense, had several successful grant applications, published nine papers, and finally reunited in person at the end of the year for a (vaccinated + covid tested) holiday party! We’re looking forward to 2022 and all that it holds.
