Congratulations to Vertebrate Ecology Lab grad students Emma Nicholson and Taylor Azizeh who were both awarded 2022 CSU Council on Ocean Affairs, Science & Technology (COAST) Graduate Student Research Awards!

These competitive $3,000 research grants will help support their Moss Landing Marine Laboratories thesis projects. Emma’s thesis will focus on harbor seal habitat use in Elkhorn Slough while Taylor’s thesis will explore the foraging ecology of emperor penguins in Antarctica 🦭🐧🎉

Vertebrate Ecology Lab grad students Shawn Hannah and Lauren Cooley have spent the last few days in Philadelphia, PA attending the annual Experimental Biology conference . It’s a beautiful day for some fieldwork! 🦭🌾🌊

For her master’s thesis, VEL grad student Emma Nicholson is conducting harbor seal surveys around Elkhorn Slough to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of these shy pinnipeds. In these photos, Emma is joined in the field by her trusty team of volunteer seal spotters- Jack, Taylor, Grace, and Sophie.
