TEACHING & LEARNING | LEARNING IN ACTION

From middle school students teaching and collaborating with their peers to our youngest learners building foundational skills, learning is happening across MLSD.

At Columbia Middle School, Ms. Wallace's Culinary Arts classroom was alive with cooking, learning and collaboration Wednesday. Culinary students prepare their food labs early in the week, but their learning doesn’t stop there. Later, they take on the role of teacher, leading students from Life Skills and Life Essentials through the cooking activities.

It’s a great example of students applying what they’ve learned, communicating with others and working together.

Learning at CMS was also active in Mrs. Skinner’s PE class, where students have begun their volleyball module. Students are developing the focus, coordination and motor skills needed for the game as they learn and practice the fundamentals of volleyball.

Across the district at Peninsula Elementary, students were just as busy building their skills. In Mrs. Wilson’s third grade classroom, students worked through a math lesson focused on rounding to the tens and hundreds places, practicing their thinking and putting new concepts to work.

Just a few doors away, Mrs. Ragan’s kindergarten students gathered together as she read them a story, listening closely and engaging with the book along the way.
Moments like these help build a love of reading while strengthening the early literacy skills students will continue developing throughout the year.

Different schools. Different ages. Different lessons. One common thread: students engaged in learning.
