⚛️⚖️ Your passion can become your practice.

Cody Harrison ’26 came to Idaho Law with an unusual combination of experiences — a degree in nuclear engineering, 10 years of U.S. Navy service, including work aboard nuclear vessels, and a growing interest in the legal questions surrounding nuclear energy.

He also had a very specific career goal: become a nuclear lawyer.

At Idaho Law, faculty members Tim Murphy and Marie Callaway Kellner worked with Cody to help him chart a path toward that goal. He pursued dual emphases in business law and natural resources and environmental law, building a legal education around the issues he hopes to tackle in his career.

Now that path is becoming a reality.

Cody has joined Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani as the firm opens its new Boise office. He is beginning his career as a civil litigation associate with a long-term goal of specializing in nuclear regulatory and safety law — an emerging field where his unique combination of technical, military and legal experience can make a difference. ⚡️

This is one of the things we love about Idaho Law: our faculty don't just teach students the law. They get to know their students, understand their goals and help them build a path toward the careers they want.

🌲⚖️ Natural resources and environmental law are part of Idaho's identity — and part of Idaho Law's expertise.

University of Idaho College of Law student Skyler Bollar recently experienced that connection firsthand when he attended the Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law's annual conference on a scholarship from the organization.

Skyler, who earned his undergraduate degree in Environmental Sciences at the University of Idaho, was joined at the conference by Idaho Law Professor Jerrold Long, an expert in natural resources, land use and environmental law. 🌎📚

Their participation is a great example of the opportunities that emerge from Idaho Law's deep connections to the natural resources and environmental law community.

It's also a reflection of our land-grant university setting. At Idaho Law, students can study the legal questions surrounding the public lands, water, agriculture, energy, conservation and communities that shape Idaho and the American West — while learning from faculty with expertise in these fields.

For students who want to take that knowledge even further, Idaho Law offers a J.D. Certificate in Natural Resources and Environmental Law, combining focused coursework and applied learning to help prepare students for careers in private practice, government, industry, conservation and public policy. 🌲💧⚖️

⚖️ Making an impact before graduation.

Idaho Law 2L Desalyn Swank is receiving national attention for her work to close a loophole in Idaho law that allowed the retail sale of human remains as “home decor.”

Desalyn helped draft legislation that now makes the sale or display of human remains a felony in Idaho. Her work was recently featured by KTVB The 208 anchor Hunter Funk, and that story has now been syndicated nationally.

It’s a powerful example of the kind of impact Idaho Law students can make while they are still in law school.

Desalyn didn’t wait for a diploma, a bar license or a law firm job to put her legal education to work. She saw a gap in the law, helped develop a solution and played a role in changing Idaho law.

That’s what it means to be a law school for a life of purpose and impact. ⚖️

We’re proud to see Desalyn putting her education into action — and showing what Idaho Law students are capable of before they even graduate. 👏

⚖️ Building understanding between legal systems — and giving Idaho Law students a front-row seat.📝

This week, the Idaho Tribal State Court Forum gathers in northern Idaho to continue important work bringing Idaho’s state and tribal justice systems together.

Established by the Idaho Supreme Court in 1993, the Forum provides a place for judges, lawyers and legal educators to build mutual respect and understanding, promote cooperation in problem-solving, address jurisdictional issues and strengthen collaboration among tribal, federal and state justice communities.

💛🖤The University of Idaho College of Law is proud to be part of that work.

Professor of Law Jordan Gross is a non-voting member of the Forum, appointed by the Idaho Supreme Court as the Forum’s legal educational consultant. Joining her this week are Julie Leavitt, director of the Native American Law Program, and Jessica Millward, assistant professor of law and director of the Tribal Law Clinic, along with several Idaho Law students.

The Idaho Law delegation will report to Forum members on the activities of our Native American Law Program and share information about cases our Tribal Law Clinic students have been working on.

Idaho is home to five tribal court systems — serving the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, Nez Perce Tribe, Shoshone-Bannock Tribes and Shoshone-Paiute Tribes. These are sovereign tribal justice systems, each operating its own court system under tribal law.

For Idaho Law, being part of this conversation matters. Our land-grant law school has a responsibility to engage with the legal issues that shape Idaho and the communities we serve — and to help prepare students to understand the distinct legal systems, jurisdictional questions and relationships that make this work so important.

And for our students, there is no substitute for seeing that work firsthand.

This is legal education connected to the real world — and to a life of purpose and impact.

There’s still time to join us for an afternoon of history, constitutional law and conversation as America marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

This Thursday, Sept. 17, the University of Idaho College of Law presents:

Through History’s Eyes: Looking Back to the Future of Constitutional Interpretation

Our Constitution Day panel from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. will explore how history, original meaning and constitutional traditions inform the way courts interpret the Constitution today.

📅 SAVE THE DATE: The Borah Symposium returns Sept. 28–30

For Idaho Law students interested in international law, human rights, national security or the laws of armed conflict, the 2026 Borah Symposium offers a particularly timely opportunity to hear from a leading scholar and practitioner in the field.

The symposium opens at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, with a keynote address by Laurie R. Blank, Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the International Humanitarian Law Clinic at Emory University School of Law.

⚖️ Blank’s expertise includes international humanitarian law, the law of armed conflict, international criminal law and national security law. Through Emory’s International Humanitarian Law Clinic, her students work with international tribunals, nongovernmental organizations and militaries on complex legal questions involving contemporary conflict.

What does history have to teach us about the Constitution — and the future of constitutional interpretation?

💛🖤 Join us Thursday, Sept. 17, from 3:30–5:30 p.m. at the University of Idaho College of Law’s Front Street Building in Boise for “Through History’s Eyes: Looking Back to the Future of Constitutional Interpretation.”

And there’s something special waiting for guests after the panel. 📚

💫Idaho Law is unveiling a new rare book and historical artifacts exhibit, featuring materials from the collection of Idaho legal historian and former Attorney General and Lieutenant Governor David Leroy ’71. Many of these remarkable artifacts will be on public display for the first time ever, offering a rare glimpse into Idaho’s legal and constitutional history.

The new exhibit case was made possible through the generosity of Idaho Law alumna Dennis Johnson ’79.

🌎⚖️ From Idaho to Sweden: Idaho Law faculty expertise in the global conversation.💛🖤

When complicated legal questions capture public attention, our faculty are often called upon to provide the expertise and perspective needed to understand them.

Recently, University of Idaho College of Law Professor David Pimentel, an expert in child protection law who has written extensively about “free range parenting” and children’s rights, was interviewed by Göteborgs-Posten, western Sweden’s biggest daily morning newspaper, reaching an audience of more than half a million readers each week.

The story examines a heartbreaking case in North Carolina involving the death of a 7-year-old boy and the subsequent prosecution of his parents, raising difficult questions about parental responsibility, child safety, childhood independence and the role of the law when tragedy strikes.

Pimentel's expertise helped give Swedish readers a broader understanding of the American legal and cultural context surrounding those questions — including the tension between protecting children and allowing them appropriate independence.

It’s a powerful reminder that Idaho Law faculty scholarship doesn't stop at the classroom or the borders of Idaho. Our professors are contributing their expertise to important conversations locally, nationally and around the world. 🌍📚

The 2026 Idaho Law on the Lake Vandal alumni gathering was one to remember! Alumni and their guests gathered this evening at the beautiful Shore Lodge overlooking tranquil Payette Lake for a night filled with friendship, memories and plenty of Vandal spirit. 🌲🏔️

And with Brundage Mountain possibly waking up to a dusting of snow tomorrow morning… ❄️👀 …we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful Idaho setting!

New Dean Brian Kane was welcomed by Idaho Law alumni, along with University of Idaho President Scott Green and Chandra Zenner Ford, Senior Associate to the President and Center Executive Officer for Boise and Southwest Idaho.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this annual tradition such a wonderful celebration of the bold and the brave. ⚖️
