What started as an undergraduate research project is now a published paper! 🎉

Congratulations to College of Science alumna Katie Theissen (B.S. mathematics, applied biology option ’25), whose Hill Research Fellowship project was recently published in Biological Invasions.

Working with professors Jennifer Johnson-Leung and Jim Nagler, Katie used watercraft traffic data to model how invasive quagga and zebra mussels could spread among Idaho waterways. The research could help agencies identify where monitoring and prevention efforts may have the greatest impact.

Katie is now putting her data skills to work as a data quality assistant at Kynetec.

Big ideas in photonics are getting much smaller. 🔬💡

Congratulations to University of Idaho physics faculty member Andreas Vasdekis and his colleagues on their new paper published in Nature Photonics.

The research introduces a chip-scale laser platform that can shape light across both space and time—capabilities that previously required complex, bulky optical equipment. This advance could support future innovations in microscopy, medical imaging, communications and ultrafast laser technologies.

The fall 2026 COBRE/INBRE Research Seminar Series is bringing researchers from across the country to the University of Idaho Food Research Center!

Join us for conversations exploring empathy and health care, women’s bone health, prenatal nutrition, and maternal and infant nutrition. The series begins Wednesday, Sept. 16, with Tracy Adkins of Lewis-Clark State College.

Applications are open for the College of Science Fall 2026 Travel Grants Program.

Graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty and full-time staff may apply for up to $1,800 to support professional development travel. Applications for travel planned during Fall 2026 are especially encouraged.

Application materials generally include a one-page narrative, proposed budget and short CV. Some applicant categories also require a letter of support.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18. For complete eligibility and application requirements, contact Associate Dean Grant Harley
