This past week we experienced the loss of one of our beloved PreK class guinea pigs, Lilo.
While this was a sad moment for both children and teachers, it also gave us an opportunity to gently teach one of life’s hardest lessons. We talked with the PreK students in an age-appropriate way about what it means when a pet dies, reminded them that it’s okay to feel sad and ask questions, and shared happy memories of our silly and sweet pig, Lilo.
Children experience grief in many different ways. Some may ask lots of questions, some may seem unaffected, and others may revisit the topic days or even weeks later. All of these responses are normal.
If your child has experienced the loss of a pet, here are a few ways you can support them:
🤍 Listen and let them share their feelings.
🤍 Answer questions honestly using simple, clear language.
🤍 Reassure them that it’s okay to feel sad and that everyone grieves differently.
🤍 Remember the special moments you shared with the pet by looking at pictures, telling stories, or drawing a favorite memory.
Lilo was deeply loved and cared for, and we’re grateful for the joy she brought to our classroom. Thank you for partnering with us as we help children learn empathy, compassion, and resilience through life’s experiences. ❤️

Want to skip the wait list?? Palouse Early Learning Center is having open enrollment during the months of June, July and August! If you want to enroll your child, no matter their age, you can do so without the lengthy waitlist times PELC navigates during the school year. Every summer we open spots in every classroom so now is the time! If you are interested, please reach out and pass the word to anyone who may be interested in childcare. Current families who refer others will be eligible for a tuition credit (summer months only).
