Congratulations to one of our Interior Architecture and Design students graduates, Ainsley Bauer, on receiving the Northern Pacific Chapter Student Recognition Award from the International Interior Design Association (IIDA)!

This year she attended TOAST in Seattle to celebrate all of the achievements of IIDA Northern Pacific Chapter.

She was awarded the prestigious Student Recognition Award for her work helping to get legislation passed in 2026 of Bill H790, that recognizes Interior Design as a profession in the State of Idaho.

Get your paint brushes ready for the 17th annual Palouse Plein Air!

Erin L. Cassetto of Clarkston, WA is the 2026 Palouse Plein Air juror. Cassetto earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Art History from Drury University and went on to earn Master of Fine Arts from Washington State University. Cassetto’s award-winning paintings have been recognized in The Art of Watercolour magazine, juried shows, and plein air competitions. Cassetto’s paintings are held in public and private collections, including the City of Moscow, Idaho. When she is not in her art studio in Clarkston, WA, Cassetto spends time with her family hiking and fly fishing. She'll often carry both her fishing equipment and painting supplies with her into remote areas. On days when the fishing is slow, having a paintbrush handy is so rewarding. Cassetto will adjudicate the exhibition at the Third Street Gallery inside Moscow City Hall. The exhibition is set to open on Thursday, September 17th with an artist reception and awards ceremony from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Mike Sonnichsen is an artist and printmaker whose work explores systems, patterns, and geometry and is often driven by familiar found objects. Light, color, and the mechanics of print processes are employed to reveal previously unseen poetic and formal qualities of the ordinary. While the results are often optically dazzling, his work reflects some of the ideals found in Ta***ic art, cymatics, and sacred geometry. These printed works may at first appear attractive or playful, yet they belie a complexity of process (which include chance operations), color layering and mixing, and mathematical symmetries. From a formal standpoint, these works attempt to resolve or integrate the square and circle, yet viewers may also sense references to textiles, quilting, tiling patterns, and toys or games.

Sonnichsen’s work is currently on view in “Color and Process,” a two-person exhibition with Kevin Haas. The show will be open to the public at the Third Street Gallery until September 4, 2026.

Liam Peterson’s sculpture, “Manta Ray,” was one of four University of Idaho Art and Design students’ work that was chosen by the City of Moscow to be displayed in the Sculpture Garden at the Intermodal Transportation Center on Sweet Avenue.

Liam Peterson, from Teton Valley, ID, is a junior studying Art and Design at the University of Idaho. Peterson says: “My overarching goal when I create is elegance. I believe there's an energy that is given off by merely being in the presence of an elegant object. You can be inspired without even knowing it. My obsession is to infuse that energy back into an object of my own. It can be stored or released on the imagination. The right object will create a world in your head and will make you believe in a possible world.”

The Intermodal Transit Center Sculpture Garden was created by the City of Moscow Arts Department in 2012, and it provides art viewing opportunities for the public as well as exhibition space for emerging regional artists. Each year, a selection panel chooses sculptures to be displayed at the Sculpture Garden for approximately twelve months. These works are viewed by travelers utilizing the many modes of transportation supported by the
Intermodal Transit Center.

I met Ernie Fuglevand, a mural painter yesterday!

Ernie is part of a loose knit group of area muralists. He studied at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle and has been working as a muralist for the last couple years. His friend and fellow muralist, UI Alumna Mikaela Herrick recently posted a request in their regional muralist Facebook group. She was looking for someone to paint the UI Brand on the grain elevator on Jackson St. Moscow. He thought the job looked fun and it gave him a chance to try out his new Virtual Reality (VR) Headset, that he recently started using to help him visualize the proportions of large murals. In the past he used a slide projector mounted on an elevated platform, but renting the platform was costly.

Kevin Haas works across traditional and digital forms of printmaking to examine the systems and infrastructures that shape daily life. His recent work, using watercolor and screenprinted resists, depicts a range of subjects that elicit questions about the role technology plays in everything we do. Often focused on time, permanence, and obsolescence, his work functions as the residue of the systems he explores, considering what accumulates, what erodes, and what endures.

Haas’ work is currently on view in “Color and Process,” a two-person exhibition with Mike Sonnichsen. The show will be open to the public at the Third Street Gallery until September 4, 2026.
