An Important Update for MES Families and Community Members
As we head into the new year, we want to take a moment to express our gratitude for the Morrisville Elementary community. Our students, educators, and families continue to show resilience, care, and commitment every day, and we are thankful for all that makes MES such a special place.
We also want to share an important update.
North Carolina legislators have still not passed a state budget, now more than six months overdue. This ongoing delay has real consequences for our schools, impacting educator pay, classroom resources, staffing, and essential student supports. North Carolina is currently the only state in the country without an approved budget.
These challenges are compounded by long-standing issues. When adjusted for inflation, average teacher pay in NC declined more than 20 percent between 2002 and 2022, far outpacing the national average decline. Additionally, the Education Law Center recently ranked North Carolina last in the nation for education funding.
In response, our educators are choosing to speak up.
On Wednesday, January 7, at least 12 Morrisville Elementary educators plan to participate in a peaceful walkout and stand near the Publix at High House Road and Davis Drive. This action is intended to draw attention to concerns around student and school conditions, educator working conditions, the lack of a state budget, continued withholding of Leandro funding, and the reality that many educators are working multiple jobs to make ends meet. Educators and community members from nearby schools may also join in support.
The MES PTA is sharing this information so families and community members are aware. We encourage you to stay informed, engage in advocacy in ways that feel right to you, and consider reaching out to your elected representatives to voice your concerns about public education funding in North Carolina.
Public education thrives when communities are informed, engaged, and united. Thank you for supporting our educators, our students, and Morrisville Elementary.
