Dr. Reilly’s AP English Literature class have started the new school year out of their seats and up on their feet as they worked on their “Quotes and Contrasts” Station Rotation, analyzing their current novel, “Purple Hibiscus” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The “Quotes and Contrasts” Station Rotation is an interactive opportunity for the students to discuss themes, share insights, and look at a novel from differing perspectives, enhancing their understanding of the meaning of a literary piece, whether it be a novel, a play, or poem.
The students were divided into groups, and visited four stations around the classroom, discussing how major topics, such as religious freedom, silence, tradition, and colonial imposition, manifest across different characters in the novel. Each group reviewed the comments left by earlier groups and added their own unique opinion on each subject, while searching the novel for appropriate quotes and evidence to support their viewpoints. The class then came back together, as each group summarized the most striking insight or quote their peers discovered.
Finally, the students each wrote a short response answering the question: Which character undergoes the most radical thematic transformation regarding freedom, and what catalyst triggers it?
