On this day 61 years ago in 1965 🎬🏆

At the 37th Academy Awards, held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, Julie Andrews won the Oscar for Best Actress for her unforgettable role in Mary Poppins.

It was a historic night for Disney. The film, which had an incredible 13 nominations, went on to win five Academy Awards, including Best Song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and Best Original Score, both by the legendary Sherman Brothers. It also took home awards for Film Editing and Special Visual Effects, showcasing just how groundbreaking the film was for its time.

Although Mary Poppins was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director for Robert Stevenson, both awards went to My Fair Lady. In a twist of Hollywood history, that film starred Rex Harrison, who won Best Actor, while Audrey Hepburn was controversially not nominated.

Julie Andrews was presented her Oscar by Sidney Poitier, marking a defining moment in her career and cementing Mary Poppins as one of Disney’s greatest achievements.

It was also a landmark year, the first time three films received 10 or more Oscar nominations, showing just how competitive and historic the ceremony truly was.
