Focus this Week: alike/different; classifying by color; positional words; birthdays; sequencing events; rhyming; graphing; counting down from 5; more/fewer; showing kindness
Pencil hold...will be a HUGE focus moving forward. It is so important for penmanship. We will also focus on rhyming...which is going to be so important for our phonics families! Don't forget to practice, practice, practice at home.
Graphing - This year all the children will spend quite a lot of time making graphs together. Each child will have a laminated 2x2 square with their name printed on it and a magnet affixed to the back. As we discuss different topics, they will decide what they like to do, what is their favorite, etc. and place their card above that picture on our board. We can then count how many children chose each answer as well as look to the side to see that number. We will learn that we can find the answer that had the most votes by seeing which line of names is the tallest. Besides helping preschoolers develop essential math skills, graphing also enhances their ability to analyze data and fosters critical thinking through engaging activities. It also fosters a love of math!
Cognitive Development-
Understanding Data - Graphing introduces preschoolers to the concept of data collection and organization. It helps the children learn how to categorize and compare different sets of information, which is foundational for later mathematical concepts.
Counting and Sorting Skills - Engaging in graphing activities allows children to practice counting, sorting, and estimating, which are crucial early math skills.
Social Skills-
Collaboration and Communication- Group graphing activities encourage preschoolers to work together, share ideas, and discuss their findings. This interaction helps develop their social skills and ability to communicate mathematical concepts.
Voting and Decision Making- Preschoolers often enjoy participating in voting activities, such as choosing a favorite snack or toy. Graphing the results of these votes helps them understand the concept of majority and minority, fostering a sense of community and shared decision-making.

Real-Life Applications- Activities like tracking the weather, counting favorite snacks, or sorting toys help teach graphing concepts. These practical applications make learning relevant and enjoyable for preschoolers.
Visual Learning- Graphs provide a visual way for children to understand relationships between different sets of data, helping them grasp concepts like more, less, and equal.
Our 1st graphing activity will be on Monday when the children will graph their favorite colors.
K5 Math
Next Monday, we will wrap up Chapter 1, and on Tuesday we begin Chapter 2: Classifying & Comparing. During Chapter 2 we will classify and compare working on same/different; one-to-matching; more & fewer; and pictographs.
