From crash-testing cars for vehicle safety improvements to inspiring next-generation of engineers at her alma mater, Mackenzie Graham has consistently stopped by our WVU Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources for the past 3 years to help our Fundamentals of Engineering Program developing career readiness for our first-year engineering students.

Mackenzie Graham was our WVU 2024 BMEG alumna, and currently a Vehicle Safety Test Engineer at Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) - Hyundai Motor Group. Her day-to-day operations include overseeing full-scale physical vehicle crash test programs with Humanetics anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs) and next-generation dummies like Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR), advocating high biofidelity testing tools and methodologies, and improving seating safety certification protocols. Mackenzie is also a mentor within HATCI, who has been observing and providing guidance for her summer interns to perform their research and testing protocols performed at HATCI.

There is no amount of gratitude from our unit towards Mackenzie for delivering her guest lectures. We sincerely appreciate her effort in traveling from Michigan to West Virginia within the day of her event, her time spent engaging with our students, and her love for our WVU Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, West Virginia University, and the state of West Virginia like a true Mountaineer 💙 💛 . We wish Mackenzie Graham all the success in her career and happiness in life as she's still charting through her adventures!!

It is amazing what our WVU Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources alumni were able to accomplish. We have the chance to have Amirah Mitchell from Johnson & Johnson to deliver a 1-hour mentorship session for 70 first-year engineering students on how to survive and thrive at Statler College based on her reflection through college career.

Amirah Mitchell, B.S.BmE is a WVU 2025 BMEG alumna, a former Statler Ambassador, and currently a Digital Analyst focusing on conducting market research to identify emerging technologies (AI, blockchain, IoT) and digital trends in supply chain innovation, as well as designing rapid prototypes and proofs of concept to explore potential solutions at J&J. Amirah also...

[1] ... performed WVU's Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) with WVU Office of Undergraduate Research in summer 2022 with Dr. Jeremy Dawson using AI to detect human emotions through the use of NVIDIA Jetson computing boards,

[2] ... performed her sophomore internship with GE HealthCare leveraging deep learning models in Python, PyTorch, and scikit-learn to enhance MRI reconstruction processes, reducing error by 50%, as well as building scalable MLOps pipelines using AWS SageMaker and Apache Spark to process and analyze big data,

[3] ... performed her junior internship with Johnson & Johnson , extracting, cleaning, and anonymizing over 100,000+ observations of master data in Python, using Jupyter Notebook. She was able to build a generative AI model for synthetic healthcare data, leveraging SAP S/4HANA data for new master data prediction and error evaluation on historical master data, then delivering insights through Agile-based comparisons of BusinessOptix and Visio for process optimization.

Amirah was then able to convert her junior internship to a full-time position after her senior year graduating from WVU Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.

We are so incredibly proud of the pathway Amirah chose for herself. Her success story is one of the greatest examples that we would love to highlight for our students. Amirah has always shown her keen interest in improving both her technical and interpersonal skills by seeking for resources and networking events within WVU Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources and outside of our college has been able to lead towards her success. What a tremendous opportunity for 120 first-year students to be able to meet Clayton White, PE, PMP (CEO), and Alexia Biafore Burge (Assistant Director of HR) from The Thrasher Group, Inc!!

Our Fundamentals of Engineering Program was also able to collaborate with the Wadsworth Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering's new department chair, Dr. Leslie Hopkinson, to welcome Clayton back home to the WVU Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.

Clayton is a WVU 2006 Civil Engineering alumnus, and it was an incredible opportunity for our first-year students to learn directly from Clayton about what Civil, Environmental, and Construction Management is, the pathways post-graduation, and how students can seek skill development opportunities to become more prepared for the workforce at the early stages of their careers.

Alexia is a WVU 2013 Business Administration, Management, and Human Resources, as well as a WVU 2019 M.S. Industrial Relations alumna. Alexia was able to help our students understand the do's and don'ts of a resume, as well as the preparation students must take prior to interviews or interacting with recruiters at any Career Fair.

We sincerely appreciate both Clayton White and Alexia Biafore Burge for their time and support for our Fundamentals of Engineering Program. Our unit also recognizes the generosity in mentorship advice and food that The Thrasher Group, Inc was able to provide for our students.

Our continued efforts with our WVU engineering alumni industry leaders led to an instrumental collaboration with Jared Forman, MBA, from Core Natural Resources (CNR), as well as support from the Department of Mining Engineering, the WVU SME Student Chapter, and the WVU Mining Extension.

50 of our first-year students in attendance were able to learn about...

[1] ... Jared's pathway from being a WVU engineering student in 2005 to his current role at CNR and get to see some of the impacts that Jared was able to achieve for himself as well as his alumni program serving as the Executive Board Member,

[2] ... some items that students should consider when preparing their resumes and how to engage with recruiters at the Career Fairs,

[3] ... why it is important to start finding internships as early as possible in college,

[4] ... the overview of the Mining Engineering program as well as the opportunities offered within their unit from Dr. Qingqing Huang, Department Chair from the WVU Department of Mining Engineering, and James Dean, Secretary from the West Virginia Coal Mining Institute and an Extension Agent from the WVU Mining Extension.

We are so glad that our first-year engineering students have the opportunity to leverage the amazing support system offered by Jared, Dr. Qingqing Huang, James Dean, as well as the upper-level Mining Engineering students from the WVU SME Chapter who were presented at the event. As part of our program's efforts to prepare first-year engineering students for the ever-changing workforce, we were incredibly honored to have Brandon Downey from Trilogy Innovations, Inc. stop by to interact with our students and share his mentorship on how they can prepare starting in year 1.

Brandon Downey and Stacy Downey have been so kind to our program with their efforts in guiding our first-year engineering students on what they should be prepared for while in college, how to prepare their resume and what students should include / how students can include the experience in the right way, how students should prepare beforehand to market themselves to recruiters at the Career Fairs, and best practice to prepare for an interview. These are the soft skills that our program believes should come directly from the industry leaders and professionals. It is also a wonderful chance for Brandon to discuss in-depth about their company's internship program, the technical and critical thinking skills through solving real problems that Trilogy Innovations can help their interns develop, and the expected outcome for their interns after the internship program ends.

We had the wonderful opportunity to host 4 engineers from EQT Corporation: Eric Cindric (Director of Production Engineering), Shaun Wilding (Water Infrastructure Pipeline), Michel Smith (Facilities Engineering Manager), and Madison Simpson (Engineering Technician). 50 students from both FEP and WVU Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering were able to attend to learn more about the day-to-day operations as well as the internship opportunities available at EQT Corporation. We would like to thank the generosity from EQT Corporation for the food, the time and support from their engineers towards our Fundamentals of Engineering Program. It was a great pleasure that our program was able to collaborate with Joshua Clark from CRH and Dr. Amy McBrayer from the WVU Department of Mining Engineering. Josh was able to provide some resume and interview tips to 30 of the students in attendance, as well as providing information on the opportunities offered at CRH. We sincerely appreciate Josh for traveling to WVU Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources to engage with and provide guidance to our engineering students, and we look forward to seeing you again at the Statler College Mini Career Fair in October!!

The Thriving Engineers Program (lead by Dr. Lizzie Santiago, Dr. Carter Hulcher, and Dr. Akua Oppong-Anane) starts with a Speed Networking event between first-year students and Statler College student organizations, faculty, and upper-level engineering students.

With 44 students in attendance, our students were able to meet various student organizations and get to talk to FEP faculty about how they can be more involve with academics and engagement during their first semester at WVU Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. The event was able to run so smoothly thanks to the amazing efforts and the passion of our upper-level students representing their student organizations.

What an amazing experience at Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia (TMMWV)!! 🚗 🏢 ⚙️ 🔩

We are very lucky to have the wonderful group of WVU Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at TMMWV hosting a plant visit last week in Buffalo, WV.

Our FEP faculty and student group, consisted of 24 first-year engineering students in FEP and 20 students from the Department of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering, received a warm welcome to the manufacturing plant from Dr. Kevin Fields (1990 B.S. Mechanical), Ben Underwood (2019 B.S. Mechanical), Anna Billey (2023 M.S. Industrial Management Systems), Brandon Troy (2020 B.S. Mechanical & 2024 MBA), and Wilson Nichols (3rd year Mechanical - expected 2027 graduation - current co-op student).

Our students were able to see the "behind-the-scenes" of how Toyota's hybrid transaxle and four-cylinder engines are produced. We also got to visit TMMWV's Innovation Center, where the engineers use the lab with various CoBot systems and specialized additive manufacturing printers to test and prototype new equipment and ideas before introducing them to the production line.

Our Fundamentals of Engineering Program sincerely appreciates Ben Underwood for all of his work, time, and efforts in handling the logistics of this plant visit. Our team also wants to acknowledge and express our utmost gratitude to Dean Pedro Mago, WVU Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, and West Virginia University for their continued support in our alumni system and investing in our students' success. We were able to host more than 500 incoming first-year students at our 2026 EngineerFEST event this past week!!

Our EngineerFEST event is designed to introduce incoming students to the many engagement opportunities within the WVU Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, featuring a career fair-style format where students can connect one-on-one with representatives from more than 40 Statler-affiliated student organizations, service programs, and potential company representatives.

[🤖🏎️✈️] ... our wonderful and amazing Statler College student organizations, student chapters, and competition clubs.

[💙💛👤] ... some of the service programs across West Virginia University, featuring the Financial Aid & Scholarship Office, Carruth Center for Counseling and Psychological Services, Study Abroad Program, Statler Marketing and Communication, WVU Library Resources, and Statler Career Services.

[👷‍♀️👷‍♂️🏗️] ... The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company. Our students get to meet Michael Conroy (Vice President) and his engineers to learn more about the company and their mission, as well as discover some of the internship and co-op opportunities being offered.
