Jazz Ensemble 1 and 2 look forward to presenting their first on-campus performance of the semester this coming Monday, October 6th at 7:30 pm in the Clay Theatre!

Jazz Ensemble 2 will open the concert with a swingin’ set of music by various arrangers and composers, including Sammy Nestico, Bill Holman, Neil Hefti, and John Clayton.

Jazz Ensemble 1 dives into Benny Carter’s Kansas City Suite (written for the Count Basie Orchestra in 1960) and celebrates the life and music of Oliver Nelson, marking 50 years since his passing. This performance will feature some of Oliver Nelson’s critically acclaimed compositions, “Hoe Down” and “Blues and Abstract Truth.” We hope you will join us!

WVU Jazz and Commercial Music Ensemble Auditions are around the corner!

Membership in Jazz Ensemble 1 & 2, Jazz Combos, and the Funk and Soul Ensemble is open to any West Virginia University student, regardless of major, pending a successful audition.

Please read “Jazz & Commercial Ensembles Audition Procedures | Fall 2025” for an explanation of the audition process. Auditions will occur in room 2071 of the Canady Creative Arts Center. Sign up to audition today!

Come check out Jazz Ensembles 1 & 2’s Swingin’ Holiday Concert tonight at 7:30 pm at the Canady Creative Arts Center in Falbo Theatre!

We are a little under two weeks away from Jazz Ensemble 1 & 2’s Swingin’ Holiday Concert on Wednesday, December 4th at 7:30 pm. This event is FREE and will be held in Falbo Theatre at the Canady Creative Arts Center at West Virginia University.

Come hear Joe Walczyk and Robert Sears featured with Jazz Ensemble 2 and Jazz Ensemble 1 performing the beloved Ellington and Strayhorn “Nutcracker Suite.”
