We are delighted to welcome Dr. Neil Humphrey as Teaching Assistant Professor of Public History!

This year, Dr. Humphrey is teaching courses in Public History, Cultural Resource Management, Historic Preservation, Local History Methodology, and Modern European History. Broadly trained, he offers courses that challenge students to explore different methodologies for studying and communicating history to a range of audiences. Before WVU, Dr. Humphrey served as a Historical Resources Program Administrator at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, interpreting the history of Ohio’s parklands for public audiences. Collaborating with local partners and government agencies, Dr. Humphrey created historical markers, provided public lectures, organized discussions, and designed interpretive hikes to connect the public with their past. His research explores how dogs, as family companions, altered domestic and urban environments historically, as well as individual and collective habits, local and global economic markets, and traditional human and canine behaviors. In both his research and his teaching, Dr. Humphrey seeks to demonstrate the relevance of the past for the public. He recently published a piece on the importance of the Battle of Blair Mountain in Matewan, WV, for understanding extractive capitalism, labor organizing, and West Virginia’s history which you can read here: https://origins.osu.edu/read/battle-blair-mountain.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Aimee Loiselle as Associate Professor of History!

This year, Dr. Loiselle is teaching Appalachian and modern American history. Her research brings together working-class history, political economy, popular culture, and gender to study labor in the twentieth century. In ongoing competition over the terms of globalization, she frames the United States as a hub for labor and capital and highlights women, gender, race, and citizenship in her work. Her first book, Beyond Norma Rae: How Puerto Rican and Southern White Women Fought for a Place in the American Working Class (University of North Carolina Press, 2023), uses the 1979 movie Norma Rae as a portal into the history of women in U.S. textile and apparel manufacturing from 1900 to 1985. Her current research examines the financial, manufacturing, and shipping systems from 1964 to 2019 that served hip-hop lifestyle companies. By including workers on the line in the factories of the South and Bangladesh as well as models on the runways of Atlanta and London the project challenges the notion that "entrepreneurs make it on their own” and seeks to understand the industry's dependence on transnational finance and women workers in supply chains cultivated by U.S. imperialism.
