ave Today is the anniversary of the First Eagle Scout Award. Arthur Eldred became the first to receive the Boy Scouts of America’s Eagle Scout Award. Eldred was officially awarded the rank of Eagle on September 2, 1912. Since its introduction in 1911, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by more than 2.3 million young men. The title of Eagle Scout is held for life, thus giving rise to the phrase "Once an Eagle, always an Eagle." Only about 4% of scouts become an Eagle Scout. Some of the most notable Eagle Scouts include Sam Walton, Neil Armstrong, James Lovell, Gerald Ford, Rick Perry, Mike Rowe, Michael Bloomberg, William Devries, MD, and Steven Spielberg. Lloyd Bentsen, former US Secretary of the Treasury, once said, “I have never forgotten my days as an Eagle Scout. I didn’t know it at the time, but what really came out of my Scouting was learning how to lead and serve the community.” We have quite a few medical students who have earned this honor. Today, Raksha Bandhan, literally meaning “the tie or knot of protection” in Sanskrit, is a Hindu festival that honors the love between brothers and sisters. It is marked by the tying of a rakhi thread by the sister on the wrist of her brother. Often, many families see this day in a broader context, bringing together cousins and distant relatives to celebrate familial ties.

A big thank you to our students who went to Weston, WV in Lewis County to help out with flood clean up. We recently heard from Bridgeport nursing faculty member Kimberly Derico about what a great help provided to those efforts. She went on to say: Several WVU School of Medicine students came in multiple different groups on multiple days and helped muck out homes and assist families. It was heartwarming, especially during a very difficult time, to see the support from WVU. You have a fine group in this class. While the work will be ongoing and take time we are extremely grateful for the support. Please pass along our gratitude. Here are a few photos she forwarded to us. Today is Women’s Equality Day. In 1971, the US Congress elected August 26 to stand as Women’s Equality Day commemorating women’s suffrage. Women in the United States were barred from voting until August 26, 1920, when the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was certified as law. The Amendment states that the right to vote cannot be impeded due to a person’s s*x. The 19th Amendment overruled Minor v. Happersett in which the Supreme Court ruled that the 14th Amendment did not extend legal voting rights to women. Today is Vesuvius Day. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD was one of the most catastrophic and infamous volcanic eruptions in European history. Today Mount Vesuvius is the only active volcano on the European mainland. Its last eruption was in 1944. It remains a popular tourist attraction, many making the hike to the crater rim each year. Today is an important day in the Catholic faith: The Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which commemorates the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven. As defined by Pope Pius XII, the Virgin Mary had “completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenful glory.” Likewise, Dormition of the Theotokos is an Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic Church commemoration of the passing of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Those whose faith follows Assumption believe that Mary was assumed into heaven. However, dormition is the belief that Mary died a natural death and was accepted into heaven after resurrection. Many faiths observe this tradition through various degrees of fasting in the weeks prior to the day. Some churches may choose to observe customs and rituals on the Sunday nearest August 15. Today is Lughnasadh, a traditional Gaelic holiday celebrated on August first in the northern hemisphere and February first in the southern. The holiday is most often associated with the beginning of the harvest season. Many observers celebrate the pre-Christian traditions of the British Isles, and particularly, the life of the God Lugh. Although strongly observed by the Irish and the Scots, the Welsh celebrate a similar holiday entitled Calan Awst and the English celebrate Lammas. In the Lammas tradition, observers made a loaf of bread from their first wheat harvest and took it to church for blessing.
